You can almost imagine it’s summer when you look at these photos from the Cove at Presque Isle Park in Marquette. Shannon from 906 Images recently captured these shots, remarking what a beautiful day it was and how calm Lake Superior was this day. Quite a stark difference from the days when the wind has Superior whipped into a frenzy of waves crashing over the those huge rock formations on the left in that first photo. It’s not all that often that there’s barely a ripple in the water and you can actually see all the rocks in the under the surface of the Big Lake. I wonder if there are any agates there?

Shannon also recorded a video that shows the rocks sparkling under water...quite unique and beautiful. It’s hard to explain to folks that have never seen how clear the water of Lake Superior is, but this video illustrates it quite well. Living around Lake Superior my whole life, I’m a bit spoiled being able to look in the water and see everything in the water around me. Makes me a bit nervous to swim where I can’t see my feet or what might be swimming around them.

So beautiful, so calm, so peaceful. Thanks Shannon.

That first picture reminds me of pics of "The
Cliffs of Moher" in Ireland...awesome! That was my
first rock. lol...when people go somewhere and ask
"do you want me to bring you anything" I always say
"A rock". I've got them from Ireland, Scotland,
Italy, Stone Mountain/Georgia, Thailand, Montana
and I'm sure more, but my brain doesn't work as
well as it used to. I've got one coming from Cabo
too...just need to see my nephew to get it!

GREAT pictures!

Did someone say “Calm”?
Looks like the perfect day.
Donna…was the rock from
Scotland wearing a kilt?

Hi
Beautiful---and snow free--shots.

Donna, picking up rocks on a beach walk was an
activity my mom & I always enjoyed. We did also
pick up some on trips out west but my dad stopped
us on the grounds of not enough room.
On a more somber note, when my brother was in
hospice one of the CNAs taking care of him
requested a rock (she did from all of the people
she helped, as a remembrance). I found a nice one
on our beach for him to give her.

Old rocks there.

Speaking of "old rocks", a recent paper that I contributed to found that the oldest rocks in the United States occur in..... Michigan! The rocks of the Watersmeet Dome near Watersmeet were found to be older than ones in Wyoming and Minnesota, based on zircon mineral data. Yay for the Yoop!

Starkly beautiful. The days when The Big Lake is on the dead calm end of things can be just as interesting as when it is at it's most angry.

Here is a 4 photo collage I made, taken on the opposite side of Presque Isle, looking down into about 3 to 4 feet of clear water with small wave ripples.

Alex, no kilt. lol...

I love rocks. I used to pick agates like a fiend.
Me and one of my buds make Labor Day our agate
picking day. We never talked about it...I'd just
show up at her house at 7am and off we went.
Spectacular times back then! When I could do it!
And I did pick way more than once a year...oh some
of the beauties!
