906 Images man behind the camera is Shannon, who explains that these Aurora photos here today were captured over two days of night lights last week. I really like the dimension of having a person in the shot with the Northern Lights, as it gives the perspective of how big the sky and the colorful lights are. What a beautiful display of the variety the lights create as they dance across the sky in the Marquette area.

We’ve actually talked about the subject of Alexis Dahl’s video before on the Pasty Cam, but she always comes up with such interesting information in her videos, I figured it’s worth revisiting. Alexis says: “Under Detroit, there’s a huge active salt mine and here’s how it works…For more than 100 years, the Detroit salt mine has been pulling millions of tons of rock salt out of the ground. But considering Michigan is surrounded by fresh water... where did all that salt come from? Special thanks to George Gallagher for providing the drone footage for this project!”

By Therese (Therese) on Friday, April 11, 2025 - 07:33 am:

Around 1980 my father was working in Research and
Development for BASF Wyandotte and his group was
taken on a tour of the salt mine.
One thing he and his colleagues learned was that
there is no corrosion because the salt absorbs water
vapor. (Without water iron will not turn into an
oxide.) So the salt-encrusted equipment can never be
taken back to the surface.

His group were all given a piece of the salt as a
souvenir of their trip underground. The chunk was
about the size of his head, but with humidity
working on it over the years it is now smaller than
a fist, and the ceramic plate on which it sits is
encrusted with salt.

These are just so outstanding! I can
only dream of being able to capture
colors like this! I'm glad they shared
them with us.

As usual…Magnificent Pix!
The first one looks like he
is standing in front of a
lava pit.
And as always Alexis,
spins a good tale about
the salt mine under Detroit.
Growing up in Detroit, I’ve
heard many a story about it.
