When it comes to feeding the birds in Munising, Kevin Dunham has a wide variety that visit his feeder daily. Thankfully, Kevin is ready with his camera to capture the visitors as they come and go. Today’s array of feather friends start with a Purple Finch. I’ve never quite understood why it’s “purple” finch when it looks much more red than purple, but who am I to argue? Of course the Robin signifies that Spring is not too far off, but with the continued Winter Weather Watches/Warnings we’ve been getting here in the Keweenaw every few days, I’m just not so sure Spring knows what’s going on.

The two shots of the Goldfinches also give us more hope that Spring is just around the corner, as the male Goldfinches shed their winter feathers and put on their bright yellow plumage this time of year, so it must be Spring then, right? Next there’s a Pine Siskin on the feeder with wings outstretched, showing off the yellow stripe across both wings. And then finally the cute little Nuthatch, that seems to defy gravity, feeding on seeds while virtually upside down. Pretty fascinating little birds.

Lesley the Bird Nerd gives us a good example of how the Nuthatch can go headfirst down the steepest tree and find tidbits to eat. She says that Nuthatches are the only birds that can walk headfirst down a tree or feeder. Other tree climbing birds, like woodpeckers, can’t go down trees head first. Interesting!

Down here, we too get a variety of birds at the feeders, including (possibly) the Goldfinches in these photos, since they have now left and migrated north. We also get Carolina Chickadees (Michigan gets the Black Capped Chickadee), Carolina Wren, Yellow-rumped Warbler, House Finches, Downy and Red Bellied Woodpeckers, among others.

Only issue I have is that every time I go outside to feed them, they call me "cheap"; it's not like we're buying low quality food!!! ;-)

Nice looking birds and they always seem to follow me

around and take the truck back through!! lol
