This past Thursday, there was some outstanding Aurora Borealis activity seen across many areas of the U.P., including the Keweenaw. We have photos here today from two photographers, one from Lake Linden, with photos from his home, Chad Johnson. It’s a bit unusual to see them so vivid and clear right in town, but this display was something else. Chad’s first photo is was is referred to as a Corona Aurora Borealis and happens when the auroral activity peaks, the aurora becomes very bright and usually goes from a narrow band to a wider display that covers much of the sky. Chad said he snapped this one overhead in his driveway, using his cellphone, which takes better nighttime shots than his actual camera. His next three shots were also taken from near his home, with the last one showing his house lit up and the Northern Lights shining above it. Pretty amazing!

The last four photos are from the second photographer, Judy Byykkonen. She said she was already in bed and her daughter woke her up to go to Calumet Waterworks Park for her shots. Judy said she didn’t even take time to change, just threw her jacket on over her pajamas, stuffed her sockless feet into her boots and away the went. Looking at Judy’s photos, you can see they weren’t the only ones that thought about this spot for pictures. An impromptu watch party quickly took shape! You can see how the Aurora was lighting up the water and ice on Lake Superior and if you look closely you can see the glow of others there, snapping photos with their cellphones. Judy said her four photos were taken with her cellphone, also. What an absolutely awesome display!

In The Keweenaw shares what they described on their video intro as, “An explosive display of the Aurora Borealis on March 23rd, 2023 over East Hancock, MI. Includes actual video footage of the Corona that was overhead!” So much beauty surrounds us here UP North. I’m thankful for folks that capture it and share it with us all.

WOW indeed!!! The first one takes one’s breath away. This would

be on my bucket list if I was healthier. Many thanks to all who

submitted these gems.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO stunning....Wowowowowoow.....I
missed it too. Sniff. This has been the most
phenomenal light show in forever....it was on TV
that these were the strongest lights in a very long
time. And they saw them in Arizona! Some parts of
the country that never sees them...got to see them!
Phenomenal!

Of course this happened when we were vacationing
down south. So sad that I missed it so thanks to
these awesome photographers for sharing their
shots with us.

They were visible in towns a little north of my
downstate town (Jackson, MI) and might have been
visible here, but we were socked in with cloud
cover.

That first picture looks like some awesome celestial
flower to me.

Simply awesome. The chances of seeing one of these huge events is the difference between living in the U.P. vs. visiting (no matter how often). I was sure my U.P. friends would capture this after I read how large an event this was.

I have read that cameras capture more and deeper color than the unaided eye. Both times I have been an eyewitness the color was small streaks of almost pure white, not near as massive as these beach pictures.

Eagle River, but nothing like this, truly Beautiful
and Amazing!!
