Beth Jukuri (the first five photos) and Judy Byykkonen (the last two photos) teamed up for today’s Pasty Cam. They went skiing around Calumet Lake with their Hok Skis recently. Judy commented about the trails, saying: “There is not a groomed or designated trail around the lake. However, it was apparent that people had been walking it and snowshoeing too. One has to go a small part of the way on a snowmobile trail if going all the way around the lake. We did go around the lake with our Hok skies and also did the marked Forest trail.” It looks like a great place for either Hok Skis or Snowshoes.

If you’re unfamiliar with Hok Skis, I found this explanation on the following webpage: ADK.org It’s actually a review of the skis, but I thought it was an easy description to understand.

The best way to describe the Altai Hoks is they are a hybrid ski that brilliantly combines maneuverability of a snow shoe with gliding qualities of a cross country ski. It is a short, wide, backcountry ski and, importantly, incorporates a skin, mid-section of the base which grips when going uphill, yet provides minimal drag on glide. The ski has metal edges improving control. The base requires little or no waxing.
This is on my bucket list, to rent a pair to try them out and see if it’s something I would enjoy more than my snowshoes, which I love.

Visit Keweenaw shares a video about Calumet Lake Winter Trails with a bit more information about the trails being fat-tire bike friendly thanks to new grooming equipment purchased with the assistance of a Destination Development Award from Visit Keweenaw.

I LOVE that decoration on the tree...I did a couple
different decorations in a couple different places
I lived. I wonder if stuff is still there?

I hope they weren't out the last couple of
days. It's been too cold for polar bears out
there. Starting tomorrow we should have
gorgeous days for playing outside. We're
going out to tackle the roof tomorrow. That
should be fun too. I like the decoration on
that tree also. I have one like it but it's
white.
