I’m actually going to let Nancy Haun do the “talking” in today’s notes, since she did such a good job explaining her photos:

What is a penstock and what do I do with it? First of all a penstock is a pipeline that carries water from the dam - in this case the McClure Dam on the Dead River to the powerhouse. When this over 100 year old wood penstock ruptured it was decided to build something new. Every winter the water still running through the penstock freezes and we have wonderful ice sculptures to enjoy! I hiked up the well plowed pathway to the middle of the penstock as it went toward the building in the photo- amazing! There is more to explore here next time I come-probably Spring or Summer. The Dead River and it's waterfalls and drops are beautiful. I will also post the location-right off of Wright Street and just a mile or so from Wal-Mart! So much beauty surrounds us!

Nice winter photos!! The video, WOW, did that
bring back memories!! Very inspiring and I think
I'd like to do just about everything Nick & Andy
were doing. LOL Yeah, sure!! I could relate and
remember everything he was discussing, except for
the coffee shops, they were definitely not
there.lol I think our best coffee shop at the time
was the, Coachlight restaurant and it was
fantastic for breakfast. Marquette didn't have all
the restaurants and retail shops when I was at
NMU either. McDonald's, BK and Togo's and Shopko
and that was about it. Bar's, now that was a
different story, lol and the legal age back then
was 18.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, I'm going to
forward this to a few college buddies, they'll
enjoy it as well.

I'm presently picturing Uncle Chuck dropping from that rope swing! Unfortunately, I'd be that guy that can't hold on two seconds and land on the beach just short of any deep water.

It seems like there are too many coffee shops everywhere. Here at home, the only other thing we don't need more of is one more car wash. They're everywhere now too.

And it's very cool to see that Togo's is still open in Marquette. Back in the day, Togo's was the only place that delivered to the MTU dorms late at night, but they've been long gone from Houghton. The pepper steak was my favorite.

Shall we all get "plus sized" paddle boards and join up this summer? I'm in.

LOL.... Yes, I did forget the Beef-A-Roo, lol. I
don't remember... Sambo's but I do recall, Sandy's
fast food which eventually became an Arby's.

D.A. I did that rope swing, but the one we were
out at was at the Dead River Falls I think it was
called. I remember we had to hike a bit to get
there. Hey, antifreeze was involved, lol. As for
Togo's, #8 & #16 large, with hot peppers! Still
went there even while I working, but small was
plenty and easy on the hot peppers.

Paddle board, my better half has one, me... I'll
stand on the shore with a life ring, tied to a
long rope and I'll even bring my whistle in case
you tip over D.A.!!

I'm sure Capt.Paul has some MTU stories similar to
ours, come to think of it, I have a few that took
place 99 miles north and a little further as
well!! lol :=))
