Debbie Jarve heads to work when the rest of us are probably still cozy in our warm beds, but because she works so early in the morning, she is treated to scenes like these around Houghton. Just look how peaceful and quiet Sheldon Avenue is with not a vehicle on the road. Then Portage Canal, too, so still and dark, reflecting the Portage Lake Lift Bridge with all the lights aglow. Her shots looking down the canal and across at Ripley were as the sky was brightening up and by then it was looking just a bit hazy, which gives the scenes a different look, but still beautiful. So if you’ve ever wondered what Houghton and surroundings look like at 5:00 a.m., here you go! Of course the bonus of going to work that early, is that you get done in the early afternoon and can still enjoy a good part of the day.

Speaking of wondering...if you’re curious about the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and what the rock that it sits on is about, we have a video from Alexis Dahl to fill us in on the ancient geologic processes that made it possible to be built on Old Lava.

I was scrolling down, looking at her
pictures thinking how good they were,
especially the Mont Ripley one. Then came
the bridge pictures. Oh my word they're
beautiful. I don't want to be out that early
but I'm sure glad she was.

As always, I totally enjoyed Alexis's
adventure. She's a gal after my heart with
her love of lighthouses because I love them
also. And the Eagle Harbor lighthouse ranks
right up there. We've visited it on a number
of occasions. I didn't realize that they
actually had a lighthouse keeper until 1982.
So thanks for that, Alexis. When we lived in
Minnesota, I loved driving up the coast to
see all of the waterfalls and the
lighthouses, especially Split Rock, which
we've also visited on a number of occasions.
Like Whitefish Point, they also have an
Edmund Fitzgerald memorial in November. That
was very somber but interesting. But they
just don't have nearly the lighthouses that
Michigan does, because they only border one
of the Great Lakes. Granted it is THE Great
Lake, but still. There's no place like
Michigan for Great Lakes and lighthouses.
I'm anxious to see Alexis's next lighthouse
adventure. Thanks Alexis

Excellent photos, thanks Debbie Jarve, and Mary for posting.
Kinda unusual to see Portage canal without any ice in early December, but I'll bet that will change before long.

Such calm on the Portage.
Where'd all that November wind go?
