With the beginning of September and the start of school in many places, summer is officially over, so Brita Haapala shares a collection of summer in the U.P. scenes to wind things down. These photos all represent what summer is about here in the Upper Peninsula, but Brita’s first shot is my favorite, depicting the sheer joy that summer brings with her son jumping on the shores of Lake Superior. Just look at the expression on his face...does it get any better than this?

My second choice for a favorite, is the fourth shot. It brings peace and quiet to me with just a glance, the reflections, the colors, the still water, all represent calm for me. For more of Brita’s photography, click on the following link: Copper Country Captures

Since school has either begun where you live or will begin next Tuesday, we have a geology lesson from Dr. Nat about St. Anthony’s Rock in Saint Ignace and how the Nipissing Highstand shaped the Lake Huron Shoreline.

What a wonderful collection of pictures - for all the reasons Mary mentions!

And it doesn't get any better than a class by Dr. Nat! After decades of visiting St. Ignace and never hearing about St. Anthony's Rock, Michigan Rocks had a video on the sea stacks in the area. I appreciate understanding the whole process - thanks Dr. Nat!

Nice set, but I can’t get the video to play. :-(

Hi
Our vacation home is in the Straits area, so I'm
familiar with St. Ignace and St. Anthony's Rock,
which had, briefly, a slightly different name in our
family. Me, my aunt and my aunt's granddaughter were
visiting the rock, and we told the child that it was
St. Anthony's rock. She misunderstood and called it
Big Anthony's Rock, which sounds like it was named
after a UP mobster.

These pictures are so, so good. I don't even
want to think about summer being over. It's
such a depressing thought. But these
pictures are anything but depressing.

We just got back from spending the afternoon
at Bucky's and what a gorgeous day to be
there. The waves got crazier and crazier as
the afternoon wore on. Moms and dads had to
get their children out of the water because
the waves were that intimidating. There were
a couple of paddle boarders just getting
there as we were leaving. I can only hope
they'll be very careful.

Thanks for the lesson, Nat! Always nice to
learn stuff .
