A month ago on March 12, 2022 we featured the “Mountainous Shoreline” of Lake Superior, snapped by George C. Bailey and he’s back with an update here today, showing there are still some enormous cliffs on his shoreline. Someone asked him how thick the ice is there and he said the thickest part was at least 20 ft at the maximum this winter about a month ago. And he would estimate the ice in the picture where it extends from right to left at its thickest is about 10 to 12 feet thick. Pretty incredible when you think about it. The last picture is the one that truly blows my mind, how thick the ice has built up there over the winter. It is melting, but taking its time with the on again, off again winter/spring weather we’ve been having. I wonder what date it will be when it’s all gone?

With the gale force winds the last couple days the boats have taken cover at Bete Grise and Marquette. Tonight they are finally moving out.

The most interesting thing I learned when I took the Quincy Mine tour is that before the hoists, when the miners had to climb down (and up) using ladders, they were only paid for the time spent at their work stations. Climbing time was totally unpaid.

The other thing was learning the purpose of the "Dry House" (ruins are right across U.S. 41). It was fill with ropes on pulleys. The miners would hang their sweat soaked coveralls daily to dry them out to be ready for the next day. I can't possibly imagine how bad that place must have smelled.
