Steve Brimm has been out and about in the Copper Harbor area, snapping shots of the winter beauty that abounds UP there this time of year. It’s a quieter time of year with not as many establishments open, but enough to cater to those that do make the trip to the tip of the Keweenaw in the winter months.

The first photo is a doozy... that’s the snowmobile trail groomer, but with the lake effect snow just about obliterating it from sight. Steve mentioned that the horn on the groomer sounded like a clown car. That must be fun to hear when you’re out on the trails.

Next is a shot of a different type of groomer, this one pulled by a snowmobile, through Fort Wilkins to groom the cross country ski trails through the park. I love the shadows created by the winter sunshine.

Lake Superior was busy breaking up the ice, pushing and piling large floes ashore. I can only imagine the racket this event must have made with nature’s fury in full force to be able to pile these up like this.

I’ll be honest here for photo number 4... I must have glanced briefly at this one for several days, wondering what type of tool or item that was laying on the ice. Then all of a sudden it hit me...this was an aerial shot and those were large ice chunks surrounding the Harbor Haus dock in the harbor. Steve titled it, “Shapes – All about design. Puzzle anyone?” Oh my goodness, would this be a perfect puzzle or what?

Last, but not least, Steve’s self titled, “Temporary Art”. Every one of his photos here today are art and every one of them are temporary scenes that nature created. Simply beautiful.

We started with lake effect snow today and we’re ending with it, too. Steve described his video as, “what Lake Superior lake effect vortices look like in real time. The LES (lake effect snow) ‘bands’ were very close this night.” Check out more of Steve’s work here: Steve Brimm Studio

The first and fifth are mine too U.C. As
for the video, it was like looking out my
window . . every day, lol. Time to get out
to shovel, even though my arms hurt from
yesterday. But, they'll be worse next time
if I don't go out today. Wow!! In the
words of my dad, "still love it here,
though".

Hi
The Temporary Art picture is my favorite. I had no
idea what the first photo even was until I read
the description.

Downstate (Jackson) we had great conditions for
cross-country skiing last Friday, Saturday &
Sunday: lots of fresh powder, sunny, calm, temps
in the low 20's. I was able to get out on
Saturday. However, since then we've had melting
and are supposed to get freezing drizzle and/or
rain. I realize tons of snow, as the Copper Harbor
yoopers get, would be a challenge. But as a winter
enthusiast, I envy you.
