We’re up in Eagle Harbor today with the Dennis Family on another lofty adventure. Walter Dennis shares a shot of the Lighthouse and another looking over the buoy that marks the Eagle Harbor channel to enter the harbor safely. You can see it was a bit foggy, so the beacon on the lighthouse was important that day, to guide boaters into the harbor or passing by.

In Walter’s video you can hear the lighthouse fog horn and the clanging of the buoy bell, which also serves as a guide to boaters when the waters are choppy and moving the buoy around enough to ring the bell. That’s especially important if the fog is thick, making it hard to see the entrance to the channel, then the sound of the fog horn and the bell guides them in.

Sadly, there's no fog horn at Eagle Harbor these
days. It was mounted on the building at the right
in the top picture. When we were kids, during heavy
weather, we would go stand in front of that building
until we heard the compressor cut out, then hightail
it around behind the building before the horn blew.
You can still hear the horns on passing freighters
sometimes when the fog is thick on the lake.

Walter has really taken that thing real
seriously...he's going places!

I have never heard of playing chicken with a fog
horn. Sounds (no pun intended) like fun. Now it is
ear buds and loud music that take your hearing away.

Well, if there's no fog horn there anymore, then what was that we heard in Walter Dennis's video, recorded on October 2, 2021)?

It sounded a bit like a cow calling for her lost calf, so maybe it was a Lake Superior Sea Cow? 😉

I second Donna's comment.
Walter...that video is a serious trip, Dude. I'll
bet you could come up with a Halloween video that
could scare the panties off of us.

I've always loved this lighthouse. I have
so many pictures of it. And there's one
hanging in my bedroom. I just love
lighthouses.
Thanks for sharing this great picture.

Deb, I'll bet you'd really like this lighthouse:

I bet I would FRNash. There aren't enough
years in my future to see all the
lighthouses that I want to see. But I'll do
my best.
