Jeff Dennis and family made a return visit to the abandoned Calumet Air Force Station recently. We just want to preface this with a warning that it is dangerous property with a lot of broken glass and dilapidated structures and that one should probably seek permission from Keweenaw County before entering.

With that being said, let’s join the Dennis family on their walk into the Radar Base, a look around some of the buildings on the ground and the bird’s eye view from up higher, with Walter Dennis, expertly operating the drone for spectacular views of the campus and surrounding area.

The former Air Force Radar Base and then Keweenaw Academy years later, sits atop Mount Horace Greeley in the heart of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula and for four decades was a busy little community of military families and then later a-buzz with students that were attending the Keweenaw Academy reform school. It was permanently abandoned in 2005 and since then the disrepair continually becomes worse, due to neglect and moreso destruction by vandals. It once was a thriving Radar Base and is sad to see it in those conditions now. Perhaps the costs to do anything new with the area, are just too high.

So sad to see the burned out block in Calumet this morning. Praises to the fire fighters who contained the fire to the one block so it didn't spread and burn the whole downtown. Heart breaking to see the pictures.

Calumet. Great Sadness...

These pics bring back plenty of memories. It sure
was a thriving base a while back. I dated a young
lady in 1974-1975 who's father was stationed at the
base. It was quite busy back then as I recall.

We also used to do a lot of deer hunting around
there and around Gratiot Lake (6th pic) and the
Iron Gate Rd. while we had the camp at LB.

Thanks for the memories.

Great pix, haunting video.
