We can always count on E. Neil Harri for a different perspective on the views we see around us almost every day here in the Copper Country. Today he takes us on a flight looking over Michigan Tech, Houghton, Mont Ripley, Hancock and beyond. Follow the Portage Canal to the Lift Bridge and just past that, you can see the bend the Canal makes as it heads out towards the Upper Entry.

A flight over Mont Ripley shows it snowless, which won’t be lasting much longer I’m sure. As the weather turns colder again, we’ll be getting more snow and they’ll have the snow making machines running to be sure there’s a good base for the skiers, too.

In Neil’s third photo we get a bird’s eye view of the Ranger III out for a run in Keweenaw Bay. She didn’t get out on Lake Superior as much this year with Isle Royale being closed. Then once it opened, it was only to those flying in there and those traveling on their own boats. Hopefully next summer is back to a more normal schedule.

Jason Hawke supplies us with our video adventure today, with a hike up on Mont Ripley in the Fall.

Nice shots, Mr. Harri!

Yes, great aerial views as usual, Neil — unlike all of my futile attempts at aerial photography, which were invariably hazy!

"MTU in November":
That looked more like the "Brown Cliffs of Dover"; I almost didn't recognize that view. I just never saw it from that angle/altitude.

You'd think I would, after a number of years in DHH with a view to the north from above the kitchen, and all my time spent in Dr. Byers' Digital Computer Lab overlooking the canal on the second floor of the old "ORES RESEARCH CENTER¹"

(¹ Later named the INSTITUTE OF MINERAL RESEARCH, after one Halloween when some wicked toot joker borrowed the initial letters from Wadsworth Hall and prepended them to the original building name!)

FRNash, the name change you mention raised some interesting questions about just what kind of research would be done about that particular profession.

Speaking of name changes, a friend of mine went to Lake Superior State at the Soo. He said that there was a building named CANUSA Hall (a combination of Canada and USA). The recurring prank in this case was to subtract the leading "C" and the final "A".
