A walk along the Houghton waterfront in the company of friends as dusk darkens into night. Judy Byykkonen, along with a group of lady friends, decided to walk and talk while watching the changes in the Portage Lake Lift Bridge as darkness descends and the lights come on to brighten everyone’s way. The series of photos Judy snapped show off a calm Portage Canal, smooth water that was able to carry the weight of a second bridge in the reflections. This Gateway to the Keweenaw has a mystifying allure, which captivates many folks who love this landmark of the Copper Country. Which shot is your favorite? Mine is the third photo.

We get some additional views of the Lift Bridge, under and around it, filmed by NorthernPOV LLC.

I cannot let this day go by without wishing a Happy Veteran’s Day to all our Veterans. Thank you, one and all, for your service to our country.

My father served in battle in both France and Germany during WWII and also in Korea. He was awarded the Bronze Star in the former and The Purple Heart in the latter. He entered as a Private and discharged as a First Lieutenant. All his Army records were lost in the great 1973 fire in St. Louis.

He then passed at the early age of 52 shortly after I graduated from Tech. He would never, ever talk about anything he did then with the closest being, “I stayed alive.” It wasn’t until his older brother’s 80th birthday party that I discovered many of the details of my father’s service. Whenever I witness or hear about anyone that sacrifices of themselves so selflessly, in or out of the military, (even in film) I almost always tear up.

God Bless You Dad.

D.A. God Bless you and your Dad!!

Also... my Uncle Rudy Aittama, wounded and
captured/ prisoner of war for 5 months fighting
in The Battle of the Bulge. Always shared his
memories of that with great honor and never one
negative word.

One of my greatest memories of Unc.. 10 years
old at Little League baseball practice, Unc came
to watch us, the coaches showed up late, so my 50
year old, 5'6" uncle hit fly balls to my team and
I for 30 minutes until the coaches arrived. I
remember being truly amazed how far he could hit
the ball, one right after the other! R.I.P. Unc!
