That’s right, school as it was these past few months, is officially over for most of the kids here in the Keweenaw at least. And you know what that means, right? It’s Summer Vacation and time to hit the beach. That’s exactly what Brita Haapala of Brita Caroline Photography did with some of her littles last week one day. One of the best beaches in the Keweenaw is Bete Grise, at least for swimming and playing in the sand. Brita said they didn’t bring any beach toys, so it was a day of imagination to entertain themselves and it sure looks like they made the best of it, sunning and burying their brother in what I can imagine was nice warm sand. It’s the simple things in life that are absolutely the best.

Brita also made today’s video and did what so many of us wish we could do... slow down time, because these kids just grow up to fast. Well, Brita only did it for a few short seconds, with her son running slow motion across the Bete Grise beach. Even the splashing sound of his feet in the water is slow-mo!

After all these years I can still feel and enjoy those memories of the joy of what's to come in the summer months when the school year ends.

I noticed no one was doing much actual swimming. I've read the surface water temperatures are a bit lower than normal this year. Here's the latest data from the satellites. Looks like about 48 to 50 degrees in Bete Grise Bay. Still, that's substantially warmer than the west coast of the Keweenaw.

I've always loved Bete Grise, but the water always
seems so much colder there. I don't know why. But
it sure is beautiful in that area.
