Bob Gilreath was on the move this past week, hiking the snowmobile trail from Hubbell, to Lake Linden where the old Quarry is located. Bob gives this explanation for what the Quarry is: “The quarry is next to an old town site called Incline. It was at the top of the incline railway going down the hill and came out just south of Louie’s Fresh Market in Lake Linden. There used to be a school and a number of houses. Now you can just see a bunch of cellar holes.”

A Google search came up with the following information about the Quarry: There was a small town near it, named Incline. It was thought that this quarry was used to supply building materials to the Calumet & Hecla mining buildings in the area. Now dammed-up, it provides water to the fire hydrants in Lake Linden. When the quarry was drained to repair the pipes at the outlet, you could see the drill marks used to break off rocks in the quarry and it appeared to be 20 – 25 feet deep. Flooded as it is now, the evidence of the quarry is harder to find. That’s about all I could find about the Quarry, but I do recall hearing that kids used to go there to swim in the summer. If any of you can tell us more, please do so!

In the meantime, we have a video Bob took on his journey, also. This is a small creek that runs into the Quarry, from the west. It’s another to make sure your speakers are on!

Pretty pictures. Spring definitely seems to come
later in the UP. Though, they are talking freeze
and frost warnings even here downstate for this
weekend and some of next week.

I believe my brother used to go to the quarry.
He couldn't swim a stroke so it want one of his
brighter moves lol, but I know he talked about
going there. I never went. There was a place
I'd go as a kid that was across the highway,
crossing on the trestle over the Calumet hill.
There were rafts there and we would go out on
them. So not smart. And I'd take my brother
with me when he couldn't even swim. Oh how
daring we were. Honestly, though, what a great
place to grow up back then. There was so much
to do in the summer. We were never home. We
were always up in the woods, crossing the
trestle that were up there. And the trains
were still operational. Memories...thanks for
them. I wouldn't trade growing UP in the UP
for anything. Sorry, I got off track, but my
mind went back there to much simpler times.
Kids now haven't got a clue. So sad for them.

the old frog ponds, pussy willows, a fried egg
sandwich on a blanket in the woods...with milk out
of a mason jar! On and on..finding trailing
arbutus, or a lady's slipper...good old Rice Lake!
