E. Neil Harri was at it again, this time flying over the Huron Islands in Lake Superior near the L’Anse/Skanee area. There are actually eight small islands that make up the Huron Islands and they’re located about three miles offshore from the mouth of the Huron River in northwestern Marquette County. These islands make up the Huron National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1905 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Also known as the Huron Islands Wilderness, it is a unit of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. If you look closely, you can see the lighthouse on the right side of the photos. Quite the remote spot to spend the winters back in the days it was manned. Right now, the ice isn’t completely surrounding West Huron island. I’d be curious to know if other years it freezes over all around the islands there or not. Neil’s third photo is flying over the land, looking at the Huron Mountains, with the Islands in the background.

Neil supplied today’s video, also, of the Stannard Rock Lighthouse which is located in Lake Superior, 24 miles south of Manitou Island on the Keweenaw point and 44 miles north of Marquette. With the closest land 24 miles away, it is said to be the most distant lighthouse in United States and had the nickname of the “Loneliest Place in the World”. This lighthouse was not manned by the keepers from December/January when the shipping season closed, until it opened up again in March. You can see by how much ice surrounded the light when Neil shot this video, why the lighthouse keepers were taken off there for those three months of the winter season.
