Barbara Bouwkamp was out at Big Traverse last week, checking out the shoreline and captured the beginnings of Superior’s coating of the trees and branches along the beach. The ice is clinging to the bottom branches of this tree and the limbs are looking heavy with the burden. I was surprised with how white the ice looks, rather than clear, like it sometimes gets when the sun shines down on it. We’re reminded that this is just the beginning for the Lake Superior shoreline, which by the end of the Keweenaw winter will look more like a distant planet, than a beach.

Make sure you have your speakers turned up for today’s video clip. Mark Heine recorded the sights and sounds of branches snapping under the weight of the icy coating. The ice cracking and breaking sounds like glass shattering.

Too cool...thanks, Mark Heine for braving the elements!

Devastating for the trees.

GEORGE L. (YOOPERINCT)....I do not know if you know that Michigan Tech. has a webcam site, if you will, that also shows the lift bridge and other cameras. It is;
www.mtu.edu/webcams/fund
Then you click on lift bridge/webcam
It is a pretty interesting sight. I like to watch the sunrise in the mornings from one of the cameras. You can watch the tech students play broom ball during winter carnival.

Thanks mickill mouse! Yes I do visit the MTU cams. Am looking forward to winter carnival and hope to see the students erecting their snow sculptures too!

Snow sculptures... reminds me of a lyric from JP... "Humidity built the snowman, but the sunshine brought him down"

Off to U of M later this morning for my Transesophageal Echocardiogram w/anesthesia. I'll be glad when this is all over, one step at a time I guess....
