Happy New Year to all our Pasty visitors! We’re going to spend New Year’s Day on the water today. Starting with the 2011 shot snapped by Donn de Yampert at the harbor in Escanaba, but I’m not quite sure which freighter that is looking kind of ghostly in the fog. Can anyone identify which vessel it is?

We jump ahead to 2014 for a shot taken by Keith Baker, aboard the Cason J. Callaway. He snapped the second shot while underway in what he described back then as “sea smoke” and heavy frost on board the boat. Sure wouldn’t want to have to walk around on that icy looking deck.

Danielle Adams brings us a more current shot, taken on Christmas Eve as the Herbert C. Jackson was making its way into the Marquette Harbor. You can’t see it in this shot, because the light at the end of the breakwall is hiding it, but the crew had a Christmas tree on the end of the unloading boom. All decorated for the Christmas season out on Lake Superior.

We’re doing some sailing on the Great Lakes in today’s video. Filmed by Captain Bud Robinson aboard the MV Louis R. Desmarais, while sailing on Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario. Pay close attention around the 3:19 point in the video, that’s where the waves really get worked up!

Is there a certain date that ships get pulled from
Lake Superior? Or do they pilot through or ???

Impressive pix and the video made my stomach turn.
Happy New Year and a healthy & prosperous 2019.

Winter shipping on Lake Superior normally ends on or around
January 15th with the seasonal closing of the Soo Locks.

OK, is it just my settings that's causing a different
format today? And the prior year's pictures aren't
showing.

Same thing with mine, Jbuck.

Thanks Gary ~ nice to know we're in the same boat
(keeping with today's theme).

I recall Charlie saying there is quite a bit of
coding he does to set up the new year and it can be a
challenge. Perhaps it'll take a day or so for things
to get back to normal.

I believe the ghost ship is the Wilfred Sykes! My uncle sailed
on it as a Wheelsman for many years.

The ghost ship was the old S.S.JOSEPH BLOCK of the Inland Steel fleet. It sat there in Escanaba for many years before they sold it for scrap.
