We start out today’s archive look back in 2007, with Bill Haller (RIP) and a number of Thanksgiving Day survivors. Bill spotted these wild turkeys on the Crystal Falls/Covington stretch of highway. So they made it past the holiday, but isn't it pushing their luck to be crossing the road like this? Good thing all Bill was interested in, was shooting them with his camera.

What a great flyover E. Neil Harri took us on in 2008. A different angle of the Marquette Lighthouse, which painted red like that, sure stands out against the snowy white background. That red paint job helps to make this beacon more visible to any passing freighters still out on the shipping lanes in the daylight hours, too.

Judy Byykkonen was in Houghton, back in 2014 and snapped a photo looking across the canal at Ripley. When it gets to be this time of year, the color palette that makes up the scenery here in the Keweenaw, gets down to just a few basic colors... namely, white and brown for the most part.

You can’t quite see Mont Ripley Ski Hill in the last photo, but we have a video today about the importance and history behind making snow for the skiing season.

2007 reminds me of the excellent turkey jerky that they sell at Gustofan's grocery store in Brevort, off US-2. Always stopped there for a couple of pounds and they smoke it right there on the property...what a heavenly scent.

All these ads on TV, in the papers..sale ends today, tomorrow, just three days etc...

Hey Alex, could it be Gustafson’s? We used to stop
there for smoked fish on the way home from NMU, but
never tried the jerky. Sounds like we missed our
bet!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 - 12:25 pm:

No, i guess we didn't stop at Gustafson's ~ their
webpage says they didn't open until 1978, and we
graduated in '77. My bad!!!

Think it must have been King's in Naubinway where we
got the smoked fish.

I thought I remembered Gustafson's from the 1960's, but the memory could be slipping again. Maybe it just got new owners in 1978.

The 2019 Pasty Cam Color Calendar has arrived, and we'll be sending them out this week to all who pre-ordered. Once again proceeds from the calendar will be helping out with the Beacon House fundraiser, in their current project of
re-locating.
They make great gifts and don't forget to buy one for yourself. You can order them here (save on shipping and order them with a batch of pasties): 2019 Pasty Cam Color Calendar

Looking at the 2008 picture, I just realized that Presque Isle appears to be formed from another Lake Superior Tombolo. They're everywhere.

Nice Pics, 2008 is a favorite, showing the lower harbor in Marquette. As for the video.... watching the snow boarders made my body ache!! :)

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 - 08:46 pm:

Yes, seeing it from Neil's perspective you can see
the tombolo! Never realized it before either. The
lighthouse was built so far back from the point i'm
sure the keepers were thrilled to walk out that
catwalk on dark & stormy nights! Maybe that was the
least of their challenges.

By Gene Carlson (Gcarlson) on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 - 09:18 pm:

You are correct! Best jerky in all of the UP. Plus
other great stuff and just nice people. Stop
there!!

Gene, Is this the store next to the Cut River Inn?

Learn something new everyday here at P.C.
If someone had said to me "Tombolo", I would have responded; "Tom who?"

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, November 29, 2018 - 09:18 am:

Thanks D. A. (Midwested)! That must be their commercial locations.

This probably won't work, but this is how i recall it looked: King's Fish Market

By D. A. (Midwested) on Thursday, November 29, 2018 - 11:33 am:

It appears that King's Fish Market retail location is further east in Moran/Allenville on M123.

Thanks again, D. A. (Midwested) ~

I'm not sure about that location ~ maybe a 'branch'!

The address i'm thinking of is: W11647 Highway US 2
Naubinway, Michigan 49762. But i can't figure out
how to capture the picture like you did.

By D. A. (Midwested) on Thursday, November 29, 2018 - 06:03 pm:

And thank you jbuck,
I found their main retail location, as you noted, right on US 2. Here is the street view:

King's Main Retail Location

I also found out they have a location in St. Ignace. Looks like they are really growing.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, November 29, 2018 - 07:56 pm:

Yes, that's it! They must have had long hours in the off season because i never remember them being closed when we went thru. Good news that they are growing!

Thanks also to Mary for fixing my link so it worked.
Mary says: You're welcome!

Man, now i want some smoked whitefish.........

D.A....if you're working for Google now, I'd like to recommend you for a raise. :)
