We’re doing a little traveling in the archives and with our “current” photo of the day. We start out at McLain Park, with Frank Anderson on a foggy day in 2005. That’s the Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Light that you can just see peeking out of the fog there. When this light flashes its beacon, it is much more visible through the haze that was there that day, guiding boats to the Portage Canal Entry. It’s an important navigational tool for all boats, big and small.
We head southeast, to the Straits of Mackinac in 2007, where E. Neil Harri gives us a glimpse of both the Big Mac and Mackinac Island together in one shot. When viewed from the air like this, the Mackinac Bridge looks every bit of the 5 miles it spans and the Island compared to the bridge, gives a good perspective of the size there, too.
Coming back to the Copper Country, we join Taana Kalliainen and her brother-in-law, kayaking in the Portage Canal back in 2012. Taana said the concrete structure there in the water used to be part of a channel marker in the lower entry. It looks like the weather has taken its toll on it and how interesting that there is some type of plant or grass growing out of the side of the concrete.
Our current photo today, comes from Jeff Dennis who along with his son Walter, took a 4 wheel ride on Monday, ending up on the shores of Lake Superior in Ontonagon, just after the sun went down.
Jeff shares a video with us, too, showcasing the highlights of their ride from Rockland to Ontonagon. What a great Father/Son excursion here UP North.
