It’s a feathery kind of day here on the Pasty Cam, as in birds of a feather, flock together or a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. We’re going to be content with the bird photos we have in hand from the archives today, starting with this detailed close-up of a pair of Mourning Birds that was featured in 2004 and snapped by Donn de Yampert. It almost feels like you could reach out and touch them.

Back in 2006, Tom Cook spotted a Ruffed Grouse spying him from up high in the branches. If you grew up in the Copper Country, you probably would call this bird a Partridge, so a little jingle was added to the daily notes that went like this...”In the first month of Springtime, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a bare tree!

The third archive birds came to us courtesy of Paul Nelson in 2016. Paul captured this shot of three Redpolls in his hand, by pre-focusing his camera on a tripod, aimed where he expected his hand to be. Then he used a wireless remote that he held in his other hand in the pocket of his coat to trip the shutter when the birds were there doing something he wanted a picture of. Pretty neat!

Our video today shows a flock of Redpolls that are having a regular feeding frenzy all around the person recording the action and while they’re flitting in and out of his hand for seeds, too. They may be tiny little things, but they sure throw their weight around to get at those seeds in the hand.

AMAZING!! And he's using Thistle seed, which is
EXPENSIVE! Holy wha! That is the coolest
thing...nothing like a lil bird to hang on your

I like the picture of the trusting redpolls, simply because a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Crazy...if I had a Twitter account, I'd tweet. Instead, let me impart a little wisdom: "Six birds in the hand and in the other, a Busch."

This web site can be completely inscrutable at times.

I know I've seen this picture (from 2008?)
… but I try to find it via the chart entitled …
"Previous 20 years of the Pasty Cam"
… on the (click →) Pasty Cam page, and it's nowhere to be found!

This technique yoosta work quite well!

FRNash, click on past email and go to cam notes 2008.

Right Robert!

FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash), that picture appeared on
April 13, 2008.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Saturday, April 14, 2018 - 04:38 pm:

Robert Hitchcock (Robertph) and jbuck (Jbuck):
FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash), that picture appeared on April 13, 2008.

And there it is, right you are.

Of course, unless I'm losing my mind …
(Now where did I put that thing? … I had it right here just minutes ago!)

… if that (click →) Pasty Cam page behaved as it "yoosta did", clicking on the year (2008) yesterday, April 13 would have brought up the corresponding week in that year, including the day in question — and providing navigation for the previous week(s) via the matrix of thumbnails at the bottom of the page: "...and if you missed the previous week" — (But not for the next week!)

Now doing that on Saturday April 14 (today) indeed shows Sunday April 13 through Saturday April 19!

Part of the problem here is that on that Pasty Cam page, a "week" is always from Sunday through Saturday, but doesn't necessarily include the current date in the selected year, 'tho that is only very rarely a problem.

In addition, "Searching the Pasty Cam Archives" via the calendar on the
(click →) Search Page hasn't worked since March, 2012!

As I've mentioned before, this site is showing its technological age. (As am I?) It's beginning to feel a bit like using MS-DOS commands on a Win-10 platform! <Sigh!>

Great pictures of birds today. I'm hoping that
this awful weather goes away soon and we can start
seeing them out here. This is getting really old,
really fast!
