Another traveling day here in the Pasty Cam archives. We’re starting out with one of my all-time favorite photos snapped by Taka Aoki back in 2003, the Gateway to the Keweenaw. Houghton night life is bright and glowing in this shot, including the now absent walkway from the parking lot to the then Wells Fargo Bank building.

For out next shot, we travel north on US 41/M 26 with David Antikainen in 2006. That’s the little neighborhood grocery store in Kearsarge, the Wolverine Market. If you backed up a few yards, you’d be looking at the USS Kearsarge stone boat.

We backtrack for our next photo from Paul and Nathalie Brandes, who took a ride down Fifth Street in Calumet back in 2013 when they were here for a visit. Looks like a quiet day, perhaps a Sunday, because there’s usually activity around Copper World and the Calumet Merchantile all the time.

Our video excursion takes us on a mini-tour of Winter in the Keweenaw, filmed by Charles Kee just last month. A little bit of everything that makes winter here UP North in that video.

I've always wondered why that walkway was taken down.

By D. A. (Midwested) on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 - 11:46 pm:

I noticed the video today showed a glimpse of Winter camping. I've done this a very few times, a long time ago and I much prefered NON-Winter camping. Winter camping was OK but it seemed that, after a day or two, almost 100% of one's energy was expended to simply staying alive. Think about one example of the time and energy it takes to make just a simple glass of water.

Nice video and pix...the spread-eagle is cool.

Did you notice the huge horn in the 2016 old lumber camp pic? I wonder when they tooted that.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, February 22, 2018 - 01:23 pm:

...or perhaps a hearing aid that comes with a convenient carrying case.

By D. A. (Midwested) on Thursday, February 22, 2018 - 05:52 pm:

Is that carrying case carved from a 10 foot pine log?

I also noticed the gender ratio of 10:1, actually about the same as my Freshman class at Tech.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, February 22, 2018 - 10:47 pm:

Huge horn, "hearing aid", "carrying case"?
Where's the "carrying case"? I see no carrying case, just the "ear horn".
(Hey, I could use one of those! — That or a second mortgage for a pair of hearing aids!)

It's not quite an Alpenhorn/Alphorn

I'll betcha dollars to donuts, er… (click →) Korvapuustit that it's a …
(click →) Nordic Birch trumpet, as known in Norway, Sweden, Finland, England, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Estonia!

P.S.: It can be so frustrating searching this antiquated site! I simply can not find the original entry for the "lumber camp" in 2016 to verify the context of that picture.

I can't even find the original entry for the "Trail Bully" groomer in 2017!
Starting with the "Previous 20 years of the Pasty Cam" (click →) here for both searches!

That horn must have been used to call 'em for dinner. Or whatever. I think working in the woods those days was very hard work. No power saws or skidders those days.

Love the first picture. I miss having that there.
