Today's look through the past 19 years of the Pasty Cam photos, holds a number of photos of historic nature. Starting in 2001 with a photo of the Paine Memorial Library in Painesdale. Erik Nordberg shared the photo back then, along with the following information:

"One of the most impressive buildings the Copper Range Company was involved in developing – and predating the high school by more than five years – was the Sarah Sargent Paine Memorial Library. Completed in November 1903, the building was given to the community by Copper Range president William Paine and named in honor of his mother. The basement of the building featured a kitchen, dining room, club room and bathing facilities. The main floors of the building housed a community library, stocked with the latest books and magazines, as well as a variety of foreign-language newspapers. It is reported that in 1928 or 1929 a tunnel was built between the school and library to allow easier access between the buildings during the Keweenaw’s heavy winters."
The next historic building in the lineup was photographed by Megan Elmblad in 2005. The Pelkie Grade School is located on the corner of Pelkie Road and Mantila Road and is still teaching folks to this day, filled with a veritable wealth of information. Check out the Baraga County Historical Museum page for more information: Historic Pelkie Grade School.

Continuing on to 2012, the third photo was taken in 1929, by John Thorley Reeder. It was shared here on the Pasty Cam by his great-grandson Mike Cooper and shows some folks swimming in front of the historic Mendota Lighthouse, just past the end of the Bete Grise beach.

To complete our historical segment today, Chad Johnson shares a photo of the Grand Island East Channel Light, near Munising, that he snapped recently on a Pictured Rocks boat tour. It first opened for service in 1868 and was removed from service in the early 1900's. You can read more about the history of this interesting structure and how it was stabilized and then maintained in its present rustic appearance, here: Grand Island East Channel Light.

Since we're already checking out Grand Island in the Munising area, I figured it would be fun to take a kayak adventure there, too. Put on your lifejacket and enjoy the view!

Good morning! I absolutely love the East Channel
ligthouse. The kayaking video reminded me of
Devil's Island at the Apostle Islands lakeshore.
Beautiful!

Nice pix and a very quiet, peaceful video. Thanks for the ride along, for a moment...I was there.

Nothing is more exhausting than searching for an easy way to make a living.

I remember the Paine Library. That was where I had my first library card.

Around 1960, the Champion Mine engineers misjudged the charge needed for a blast, and as a result the library's foundation was cracked, badly enough that the whole building had to be destroyed. What a tragedy.

BTW...2003 has always been a favorite of mine and I titled it; "Joy and Innocence". And the waterfall looks a lot like my first hike in the Smoky Mountains;
