When the kids get together at Brita Haapala's for a game of hockey, they can do it right in their own Keweenaw backyard. The Haapala's pond freezes over and the kids keep the ice cleared and flooded, ready for a rousing game of pond hockey.

They provide their own manpower to get things ready and the officials come from within their ranks, too. I'm not sure how they determine who will be playing and who will be reffing, but somehow it all comes together and the kids have a great time.

They're lucky they have a professional photographer on hand to capture the excitement of the game for them, too. And I guess Brita is lucky she has an opportunity to snap pictures right in her own backyard, so it's a win-win situation all around. Looks like the first step on the way to playing for the Wings. Great pictures of youthful fun. The Canadians hold the game of hockey in such high esteem that they have a picture of kids playing pond hockey on their five dollar bill.

Pond hockey and community outdoor rinks are wonderful. There is
a terrific classic Canadian children's book--the "Hockey Sweater,"
by Roch Carrier, that captures the atmosphere very well.

That brings back a few memories.

Hi
...and if they wind up playing professional hockey, they'll have the experience to play in the New Years' Day Winter Classic, played outside. The Wings played in the 2013 Winter Classic in the U of M stadium in Ann Arbor.

Great new pictures and a great review! Brita's
kids always have so much fun, no matter the
season. Thanks for sharing!
