Every now and then when my personal schedule runs off the rails, for a last minute Shoebox Memory I grab some old photo that appeared in Cam Notes but never made it as picture of the day, just to give a 'daily glimpse of life in the U.P.'. With all the trips up Brockway the past few days #which is a story for another day#, again I find myself out of time. But a couple of random pictures I combined tonight had a surprising connection.

First I grabbed the old ad for the Gately Wiggins department stores in Ishpeming and Calumet, posted in Cam Notes by Marlin Wenberg in 2003. Then, I thought, an old U.P. postcard about the excitement of Christmas would compliment it well. So I added the second photo posted by Barb Nelson in 2004.

There's an obvious connection - buying gifts and finding them Christmas morning. But as I was ready to post this I suddenly realized a second connection about the contributors of these two photos: in 2008 they were married, as Marlin Wenberg and Barb Nelson became Mr. and Mrs. Wenberg. A pair of Pasty Cammies who found romance ;>

Hope you and yours enjoy a wonderful Christmas celebration. Have a good week :o)

Another close post, with only 15 minutes to
deadline. Success as always. Love these vintage
pieces.

Love the vintage card! Got it all figured out
except didn't know what 'Chim' meant. Then I
realized it was 'C him'. Fun!

Very heart warming story about the 2 pasty cammers
and I always love seeing that old postcard. I had
to look at "Chim" twice, too, lol. Brain teasers
are good for us old people.

Back in the day texting

By James W. Hird (Wvyooper) on Monday, December 21, 2015 - 04:00 pm:

Boy the C him was OK but the YY really threw me for a bit till I realized it was "more than one Y making it Y's" Or as we were taught in school. WISE.
The brain cells are a smoke-in today.
That is why I never learned to read hieroglyphics.
My high school English teacher would be so proud.

By James W. Hird (Wvyooper) on Monday, December 21, 2015 - 04:14 pm:

I just went back and re-read the adds.
Just what are women's WAISTS.
I know a few ladies that might like to buy a new one in a smaller size, but I did not realize they had them for sale back then.
Personally I could use a waist in a smaller size myself but I see they only had women's available for sale. So I guess I am out of luck.
Maybe the item went the way of the high button shoes and the whalebone corset and are no longer available.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, December 21, 2015 - 04:18 pm:

James, my grandmother used to speak of 'waists'. I
think, but am not totally sure, it was sort of
what we call a 'blouse'.

But if they are really new waists, I will take one
half the size of the one I have!!!

Mama told me there'd be days like these.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 21, 2015 - 04:20 pm:

Waaaay back some women had one or two of their rib bones surgically removed to make for a very tiny waist line.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Monday, December 21, 2015 - 09:12 pm:

Could the 'waist' be a shirt-waist? Seems like I remember a term like that. It took me a little extra to decipher the code in the card. Cute, 'eh?

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, December 21, 2015 - 11:26 pm:

James (Wvyooper) - your comments had me cracking up!!!
Ken (Kenjamimi) - shirt-waist?? What is a "shirt-waist"?
So now I still don't know what a "waist" is.
Anybody??

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 - 05:14 am:

I Googled it! A waist was a early 1900's term for the bodice of a dress or a ladies blouse/shirt.

By James W. Hird (Wvyooper) on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 - 07:41 am:

Thanks for all the comments. I guess on some level I real knew that the add was talking about a women's blouse but I could not pass up the opportunity to make the comment.
It does show how out language changes with time. It is no wonder that scholars debate translations of the biblical writings.
It is so fun Eh!
