Very colorful!

Gotta love the puppy!

Happy Birthday to my good pal and U.P. sidekick, Marty! 57 years old! We're getting old MG! (Martin Gerard), we'd better make a U.P. road trip while we still can!! lol

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Thursday, August 6, 2015 - 05:08 pm:

That looks like one pooped puppy. So sweet! Must've been doing a lot of beach walking, running or swimming.
Nice lake shots too.

We are just wondering, why is it that people who don't know whether they're coming or going usually are in the biggest hurry to get there? Is it a "tourist" thing?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, August 6, 2015 - 05:53 pm:

Great bunch of photos ~ including your grandsons, Mary. ;)

So many terrific pictures today. I've
been here in the Keweenaw since Monday9
and today was the first chance I've had to
go exploring. We had so much fun on our
drive along the lake shore. First stop
was at Eagle River beach. Went to the
lighthouse in Eagle Harbor and the
overlook they have there now. Beautiful
up there. Stopped at Esrey and took in
the beautiful view there. I'm always
amazed at the beauty along that drive and
never tire of it. Took a lot of pictures
and made a lot of memories. Sometimes I
think if you were to look up the word
"Keweenaw" in the dictionary, you'd simply
see "heaven" as a description.

You've been in the Keweenaw since Monday Deb...... and you didn't even tell us?? tsk tsk!!! :P

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 6, 2015 - 10:38 pm:

I've been so busy with my mom...sorry!
Told ya when we were getting here
😉

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, August 6, 2015 - 10:57 pm:

I know, I know. We've been busy ourselves; heck, we're not even in the UP currently, but will be tomorrow.

By Tom (Tom) on Friday, August 7, 2015 - 10:52 am:

We (family) will be in the Keweenaw next week.
Looking forward to seeing Great Sand Bay and Bete Gris. Sometime we should meet somewhere.
Michigan House???
By the way, Capt Paul, my son lives in Lake Jackson, TX and is a grad of MTU also. Chem eng.
We visit the Houston area but mostly do the coast.

Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper):
"… 😉"

There's that mysterious character string again. I wonder where it comes from.

I know this: If you see it when you click the Preview/Post Message button, then carefully edit it to read "\char{128521}" (with the exact same string of digits) before clicking the Post Message button, the forum parsing engine will transform it into this: "😉", which is kind of a neat "winky"! (I wonder how many other secret "winkies" we could find.) 😉

P.S.: Hint: As noted in this forum's Formatting instructions, the "\char{…}" is the way ASCII character codes can be included in your message text.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, August 7, 2015 - 01:32 pm:

ASCII? (You ASCII no questions, I tell ya no lies?)

As it happens, I spent a number of years working with Bob Bemer, the "Father of ASCII" at Honeywell in the 1970s. (Bob was a certified Yooper, born in Sault Ste. Marie, doncha know!.)

Eureka, I found it!

How to insert emoticons/emoji into your message on this forum (some arcane computer wizardry required¹):

1. Here is a chart of emoticons/emoji that can be created using the
\char{ASCII code} (Note: Not all
formatting tag described in this forum's Formatting instructions.

The leftmost column of the above chart shows the "ASCII code" mentioned in the formatting instructions, but unfortunately shown in hexadecimal form, while the formatting tag
\char{ASCII code}
wants the value expressed as a decimal number, which will require a conversion from hexadecimal to decimal (here's where it gets a bit arcane¹).

Open the Calculator found among your MS Windows Accessories, then
1. from the Calculator's View Menu, set it to Programmer mode.
2. Click on the Hex radio button " Hex", enter the hexadecimal value from the above table then click on the Dec radio button " Dec". Use the Calculator's Edit|Copy menu to copy the resulting decimal value, and paste that value into your message text, in a \char{…} message tag.

Some possible emoticon/emoji examples:

Hexadecimal²Decimal³
Formatting Tag
Result
26BD
9917
\char{9917}
1F609
128521
\char{128521}
😉
1F63C
128572
\char{128572}
😼
Notes:
(¹ But hey, nearly any 12 year old can learn this!)
(² From the emoticon/emoji chart.)
(³ From the Calculator conversion.)

And finally: No, you can not "break" the forum — at worst case you'll just get some funny looking symbols in your message!
