Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, August 30, 2015 - 10:58 pm:

It's that time of year again... Back in 1916 a fair number of adults also chose to go back to school in the Copper Country, where classes were offered in the evening at Calumet High School. The post card is from the same era, just a few years earlier. We are grateful for the resources of the Michigan Tech Archives for preserving these moments in time. See anybody you recognize? Here's the original resolution to take a closer look.

This month has just flown past! It seems we were just seeing the leaves pop out a couple of weeks ago, and now they are already beginning to turn. The weeks ahead will bring special beauty here in the U.P. as color season gets underway. Hope all goes well with back-to-school where you live.

Have a good week :o)

"School days, school days, dear old golden rule days". Some of those 'students' look like they've been around the block a few times....but it's nice to see that they wanted to further their education.
Good week to you too, Charlie.:)

where I grew up as a teenager, there was a family that lived down the street from us, the ahonens'. the kids paul and patty. I have been thinking about them for some reason and read that paul ahonen passed away.

we all knew each other from the block.

Those desks are just like the desks we used at St.Gregory School in Detroit in the 1950s! I knew they were old then (they still had holes for the ink bottle) but I didn't think they were that old!

Could these folks have been in night class to learn English?

my grandparents AND great-grandparents

By Stewart Keskitalo (Skeskitalo) on Monday, August 31, 2015 - 06:29 pm:

Jbuck, just the question I was wondering? I
remember my parents not speaking Finnish in front
of the kids because we required to know English
and it was imperative that we not learn Finnish. I
regret not learning Finnish but I understand why.
