I thought you might like to see a photo my mom (Bonnie Rendel) recently took of one of the four bear visiting their place... This one was standing up looking at one of the gardens. When he wandered too close, my mom opened the door and told him he wasn’t allowed in the garden. The bear obeyed and eventually wandered off. My parents live near the Tamarack Waterworks area and have quite the selection of visiting wildlife.

Thanks to Brian for some interesting shots this month. Looks like Pasty Camming might run in the family.

This is a great picture. I love to see wildlife like this as long as they stay within their own territory. I have never seen one up on his hind legs like that. Thanks for sharing the excitement.

Oh man... This reminds me of the Gay Road. (The approximately 12 mile long road that connects Mohawk and Gay). My dad and I used to drive that road almost daily, and there would be mamas and cubs that would block the road making us stop until THEY were ready to move! We usually had something to feed them, and I also remember the deer blocking that road.

Here, in Georgia, if a deer even thinks it hears a car... It's GONE! :)

The nature I saw on the Gay Road, and even at the Garbage Dump, was awesome. The garbage pit, as I think it was called, was an actual tourest attraction. There would always be so many cars there, driving through garbage and feed half a dozen or more bear.

Gosh, the beloved Bear could of used this bear last Sunday when they lost to the Saints my friend. Kinda looks like da Coach, Coach Ditka that is. Hey what happened to Sharon's deck pictures?

How about a WOW here. Bear pictures are pretty special, almost as much as the moose.

were you outside when you took that picture or did you have a nice camera with zoom? i would be so afraid to go outside after seeing that bear. big dogs i am fine with but bears.. um.. afraid of big time.

To all wondering wondering about the colors, they are taking their time this season. Perhaps the mild temps and ample rainfall during the first three weeks of September has kept them green longer.

At any rate you can keep an eye on the maples in my back yard by going to the AL Cam on my site: www.johndee.com. There are also web cams located around the upper Midwest in my NCN. For your information, the maples in my backyard are usually the last to change, but do hit their peak color with the rest of the trees in the area.

We have had some cool nights lately, so that might help to speed things up, but it is hard to imagine the historical peak is about 10-12 days away!

seems to me the color season is right on schedule...we don't want to rush things here in da UP, eh...cuz den dat means der are gonna be snowballs hitting us in da @#% only too soon...but if you look at the archive pasty photos as I did last evening you will find that most of the color shots that are posted by Charlie don't happen till da October month...

By the way, my bear was nowhere NEAR as big as the guy in today's picture (thank goodness - he probably would have been in the house!). I have some hints that my visitor might now be residing in one of my neighbor's freezer. Much as I didn't care to have him around, I'm sorry he seems to have met an untimely end.

Also, I agree with John's post - there's not much color in the Keweenaw yet. It looks to be a couple of weeks, minimum, before it gets good.

I agree with ILM. Never saw much sport in shooting a bear. Dont get me wrong, I'm a deer hunter for along time. But there just arent that many bears to look at. Sad to think of looking at them in a freezer when you could see them day after day if we let them alone. Funny, I know more people bit by stray dogs than stray bears. Too bad.

I agree with sk. Having grown up in the UP (Copper Country) the first 20 years of my life, everyone always said hey. Never heard them say eh. Love today's picture! I'm looking forward to seeing the beautiful fall pictures sure to be coming soon... Thanks to the many photographers who share glimpses of God's Country with all of us displaced, homesick Yoopers!! This picture is breathtaking in a way that is different from the breathtaking beauty found in your WOW scenery photos. the black bear is such an icon of the UP (and the Keweenaw). Which other of God's creations is a beautiful, intelligent, curious, and protective (females anyway) of their offspring? Certainly these are characteristics to which we all can aspire.
And we are long overdue for a bear in WOW! Hey.

I actually thought that was a spoof with some guy in a bear suit until I clicked on and enlarged the picture. It is rare to see a pix of one standing like a human. Thought it was some guy trying to wave people into a new car wash or something. Anyway, I'm going to do my annual fall colors in Copper Harbor the first weekend in October and the scouting report makes me wish I could push it back a week. For those who haven't done a fall colors tour in the Copper Country, you need to try it one day. And I look for one more opportunity this year to gorge myself at the Jampot, which is another gem. Happy Fall, you all!

A nice picture but I have reservations about if it is really a live animal. The bear's coat just doesn't look real to me and the perspective doesn't seem right. If it is real this animal would seem to push near 600 pounds.

That's just a little bear, maybe 2 1/2 years old, about 150#. The perspective is from ground level which throws off the size for a second, until you study the bear itself; slender body, head and paws of a younger bear.

PS, there are more bear in the YOOP now than at any other time.

I grew up in Hancock and we used to drive up to
Copper Harbor to visit the "dump areas" where
bears would go to feed. I don't ever
remember seeing a bear that tall.
My question is: Is this a real bear or
a very tall person in a bear outfit?

Yes, the bear is real. My mom took several other photos of this one. Her favorite is the bear laying near the patio acting much like a big dog. I submitted the above picture because I thought it was unique and made the bear look quite impressive.
