A beautiful shot. After 3 years of trying maybe this year I'll get my kayak in Superior.Last year I got close in Eagle Harbor, but family wanted to move on to visit family in Chassel. How can I get a copy of this.

By Ginny Durst, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 08:14 am:

It doesn't get any better than this! Beautiful!

By Charlie Hopper, this time in Houghton on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 08:20 am:

This morning I had to run into Houghton, so here I am bright and early at the "Cyberia Cafe" downtown, next to Einerlei Up North and Marie's Deli. If you're in town for a visit and need a quick connect to the 'Net, it's only $1.00 for 15 minutes. What a deal!

Thanks again to Dan Urbanski for another QuietlyWild masterpiece.

By Jeff, Va. on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 08:22 am:

Sorry I misspelled Chassell

By ShawnR, GR MI on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 08:53 am:

soooo nice!

By Tim in Illinois on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 09:33 am:

I can't stand it. This photo is the last straw. We leave a week from Friday for three weeks in the UP and now that I see this I don't know how I'm going to last until our designated departure. Not only am I going crazy wanting to get the kayaks on the water, but given our current string of about a bizillion days of 90+ temps, just the fact that the guy in the pic is wearing long sleeves brings tears to my eyes.

By JimR, GR Michigan on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 10:04 am:

Awsome shot - looking at this is instant relaxation. Beautiful.

By Sarah, St. Clair Shores MI on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 12:18 pm:

WOW -- Dan does it again!

By Wendy, WI on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 02:03 pm:

An absolutely beautiful photo! Seeing this makes me very homesick. I think it's time to plan a trip back home.

By Melissa, downstate but wishing I was there! on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 02:12 pm:

What a beautiful photo! It would look great in next year's calendar.

By David S. - FL. on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 04:07 pm:

One look at todays pic and I can actually feel the big lake. It's like no other; clean, cool, massive, awesome. I used to live near the Calumet Waterworks in the 50's so I know the lake in all it's moods and splender. The guy in the kayak must feel like he's in church. Creation at it's finest.

By H. Donn de Yampert - Houghton, MI. on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 04:25 pm:

This photograph is the WOW. When you can actually feel your presence within it's a WOW. Beautitul colors to contrast with the silhouette.

Oh my goodness! Many thanks to the Still Waters Assisted Living Community and PastyNET for once again bringing a little serenity into my windowless "cubie".

By Barkley, Illinois on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 07:12 pm:

We just returned from the U.P. - unfortunately, the black flies really ruined our trip.

By WhiskeyCreek on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 07:19 pm:

JEFF. Place your pointer on the photo and right click the mouse on it - then pick the option "Save Picture As" and save it in any folder of your choice on your PC.

By Carole on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 07:29 pm:

Absolutely a WOW!!! Superior at its finest. I can feel the cool breeze and smell the clean air. Unlike down here in Troll Land.

By Jean Mi. on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 08:20 pm:

Dan you are driving me crazy! I can't come to the U.P. for three months and pictures like this cause me pain! Keep it up Dan. Can you tell us where this was taken and what time of the evening you shot this wonderful picture.

By Doug S. Wixom, MI on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 09:59 pm:

Another wonderful Superior sunset! What a way to end a day. Can't wait till October when I can be there to really enjoy one.

By Doug S. on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 10:04 pm:

Or... atleast I hope it's Superior?

By T.P. O'Connor Mich. on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 10:07 pm:

What a great time i had in the upper. Take time to smell the flowers. The humming birds were in their glory. God was their.

By Mark, Kaleva, michigan on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 10:37 pm:

The picture is beautiful. I have a question. I was up in Calumet for "heritage days." The old smoke stake near the high school "seemed" to be working. I t was bellowing out black smoke. What did they do to make it work? Burn Tires? Fuel oil? Trash? Just wondering. I thought something was on fire. You do not see black cmoke like that now a days. Just wondering

By Ken from da UP on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 10:57 pm:

Man o man! What a beautimous shot! Taken by someone in another kayak? Or is he not that far out?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 - 11:07 pm:

Mark,

I happened to be at Heritage days, serving pasties at the Lions Club booth, when I looked up to see the black smoke puffing out of the chimney. It looked to me like tires were burning, just to re-create the effect.

By the way, for every picture you see on the Pasty Cam, there are several dozen which don't make it. I just looked in my folder for Heritage Days (last weekend in June) and spotted this picture of Sheriff Ron Lahti and fellow Lion Marv Manninen chatting with some guests who stopped by our refreshment stand. At that moment, if I had panned the camera slightly left, you would see the old smokestack.

The photograph was taken a couple weeks ago, off shore of the Union Bay Campground here in the Porcupine Mountains.

That's my friend Gary Koistenen. He often motivates me to join him out on the water, sometimes after his afternoon shift - in the dark. What a blast!

Thank you Whiskey Creek

By Joan W., Ohio on Wednesday, July 10, 2002 - 09:45 am:

Wow...what a shot! Can't wait to motive to that area in about a week and a half. As many sunsets that I have seen and taken pictures of, there are never repeats!! That's the beauty of Lake Superior...but, then, it sure can turn around! Had a storm there last summer that blew trees down on both sides of our camper, winds clocked at over 60 miles per hour. Have you ever watched a storm out over the lake during the night? The old lightning hits the water constantly and as it approaches land it lets the people know who is in control!! Truly, God's country!!

By Marc, offshore GoM on Wednesday, July 10, 2002 - 11:49 am:

me too!! Six days and a wake-up, then I am on my way home. Cannot wait to see those sunsets, myself. I even miss the black flies:(

By Kathi in Ferndale, MI on Saturday, July 13, 2002 - 02:27 pm:

This one has my whole-hearted vote for WOW. I made it my own wallpaper and find a little sense of contentment and longing every time I turn on my monitor.

By AMS of UP on Saturday, July 13, 2002 - 04:33 pm:

See Ya Soon, Honey.
I love you!

By L. Az on Monday, July 15, 2002 - 01:53 am:

By Patti on Monday, July 15, 2002 - 08:28 am:

Dan, Is it Union Bay or Union River Campground?

By Kay Moore...Il. on Monday, July 15, 2002 - 11:19 am:

WOW is the only word ! Having a Slattery Reunion July 27 in Milwaukee. We've just found each other, we cousins, last year. All from grandparents from Hubbell. Only a few left in U.P. in Marquette. Any body have some input for our gathering would be most welcome ! I think most of us would give an arm or leg to live in U.P. dragonfly722@webtv.net
