For some time now, at the end of each month the Pasty Cam has presented a sunset in memory of freinds who have passed on. This month Dan Urbanski provides us with a peaceful view of evening colors from the sunrise side of the Peninsula, featuring Bear Bluff in the distance. Dan's own mother, Rose Urbanski, passed away earlier this month. Another mom who will be missed is Edna Hayward, who was a resident at Still Waters for quite some time, as was Margaret Rowe who passed on late this month.

Charles Bell, Jr. of Allouez died in October as a result of a fall over the edge of the Brockway mountain look-out. And Mr. Leonard Martens, a summer resident of Ontonagon passed away, October 22,2000 in Minneapolis. He was one who also enjoyed the Northwoods very much.

Our sympathy to each family touched by these departures.

Beautiful picture--where is Bear Bluff?

Bear Bluff is between Bete Gris and the tip of the Keweenaw, on the south-east shore of the Peninsula. We have featured pictures from there, here's one which appeared on the Pasty Cam August 17, 1998, taken by Amy Irish:

I miss the Keweenaw, it's been 16 months since our last visit. So happy to have this website to 'return' to my favorite place in the world. Since it's tribute time, a word of remembrance for my grandfather, Roy Eilola, a copperminer and afterwards, railway worker, who passed 16 years ago. He was a lifelong resident of what he always called "God's Country".

I do enjoy your tribute day...it always brings thoughts of my great grandparents who came from Finland and lived & worked in Hancock all their lives while raising 7 children- most stayed for their lifetimes. My grandfather came to live and work in Detroit after WW1. There was a big Finnish community down on Woodrow Wilson with Finnish bakeries, restaurants, movie theatres, etc. where the people that left the UP would gather. It was a 2 day drive back home in those days with no freeways and a ferry to cross the Straits! However after WW2 it pretty much broke up- but I have a feeling it would be stronger than ever these days, had it survived.

Jewel, Are you related to Sue or Sarah Eilola who graduated from Hancock High in the 70s? Just curious, as I went to school with them. I also live in the great metroplex. The internet sure makes the world a smaller place!

I would like to see some pictures of the White Pine Mine and surrounding area. For a long time it was the main economic force in the West end of the U.P. It is now being dismantled, it is like watching an old friend pass away. To all those "old timers" still in the area, Hello. Have a Grand Thanksgiving. A yooper gone west. C.J. Skoviak.
