On the way from Calumet to Eagle River this afternoon, the Pasty Cam spotted a whole field full of 4-wheelers outside the Vansville Bar. They told us they had carted their hardware from Northern Minnesota to Houghton, and from there took the snowmobile trails on their way to Copper Harbor. What a great day for a ride in the backwoods, as color is just about at its peak.

Another occurance of note today... Back in September my wife and I ran into weatherman John Dee at the Pamida in Calumet. I remember it was quite warm that day, as John was wearing shorts. We asked him that all-important question: When will we get the first snow? Without hesitation, John said, "Saturday, October 6". That was a couple of weeks ago, but sure enough this morning we were treated to a flurry off the lake. For a few minutes it looked like January! How in the world did John Dee know the exact day it would happen? Check out his website, affectionately known as Snow Central.

As these words and pictures are being uploaded, the 4-wheeling adventures are continuing their journey to Keweenaw's tip. Bet they see some more of the white stuff.

Experienced a few minutes of flurries in Waupaca, WI today, also. Must be the day for Mother Nature to remind us of what is to come.

It also snowed in Escanaba this afternoon. Even blowing along US 41 near the Delta Plaza. But not for long, we didn't have to shovel any of it. :o) Windy and cold today, 27 deg. right now as I sit here in Cornell. Watching the 'Dixie Chicks' on 13 and waiting for Red Green.

Now an irresponsible afterthought if I may.
I've always wondered about the significance of that iconic evergreen upon the back of Vansville Bar's little billboard deer(or is it a pack mule?).
Am I just looking for meaning where there is none to find Charlie?
Please help!

Oh yes, Dr. Bag, there is meaning in everything... just hard to find sometimes. It is significant, for example, we now know that our family members are not the only ones to observe that the deer looks like a mule.

The first snow of the season also in the Lower on Sat. Oct. 6. Snowed for about ten minutes near Lake just down the road from Harrison.
