Does anyone know why there has been no update on the Eagle Harbor Web this summer?

George Hite who is such a wonderful man for maintaining the site throughout the winter months spends his summers sailing.

What a funny picture!

Regarding George's Eagle Harbor Web, it is true that George spends the majority of his summer out on the big lake, however, in past years, he has made two or three updates to the site over the course of the summer...none this year since he departed. I've been wondering too....given his past medical history, I hope he is OK!

Just a little footnote to go along with the picture....The skeleton is holding a can of beer in this right hand (bones) and there's a sign taped up on his left, that says something about drinking and driving a boat, this is what you might end up like! (Not the exact wording, but that's the gist of the message!) Sure gave me a chuckle when I saw it!

Toivo - heard there were a lot of wildfires near Vancouver, BC, so be careful around there. Just got back from a cruise to Alaska & the scenery was beautiful. Still can't beat our Keweenaw. Best wishes! Ruth from Florida

George Hite is fine. We asked about him at the EH General Store (great food, even nicer people) and he missed getting in on the 4th. As of July 17th or 18th he was about ready to head out again.

Frank, from St Charles, Il - Just wanted to know have they finished the take over of the JCPenney. I think Vanmare took over the building. I used to work there. Just wondering?
We are headed to the U.P. starting Aug.14th. This was our old stomping ground. We use to live in Marqette, and my mother spends the summer in Copper Horbor in her cabin. Can't wait to smell the fresh air and cooler tempatures!

Probably the same folks took the driftwood who keep closing off the Keweenaw and putting fences and 'no trespassing'signs all over the place.

Or maybe the folks who decided that things like 5-Mile Point beach or the Kingston Shafthouse weren't needed.

Sad but true....does anyone know if one can still hike to the bluff above Copper Falls? Used to camp there many years ago...

I was looking at some of the gallery shots and saw one from Billy Slimp, of the Eagle River Dam, it reminded me of the shot from June when they had the fire there. Did they ever determain the cause, at the time there was some thought of arson?

I would say, if you want some wilderness, then buy some land,thats what I did as do many others, thats the American way.
Oh and it will get worse as more land is taken over by the so called environmental/preservation groups

Did you buy it and shut off access? THAT's my only beef with the others....as long as there is access (subject to some obvious concerns) I don't see any problem with privately owned land...

For many years the Keweenaw, though privately owned, had a lot of access...those of us who respect the land remember those days fondly....

Rick, That "privately owned" land of days past was *gasp* logging companies - International Paper owned the entire tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula until just recently (thousands of acres). Access under their ownership may not have seemed like trespass, but it was.

Frank from St. Charles, Il: Thanks for the update on George Hite. I too was concerned. I can't wait to hear of his travels. If anyone wants detailed information on the fires at Glacier, check out the nps website for Glacier. I imagine Toivo was too far north to see anything but haze.

I agree...........The one thing that separates this site from the other screaming "me first" sites is that almost everyone is just so darn civilized. We can agree, disagree, and either buy our piece of the peninsula or not, but we can do it as friends who have something very special in common. I enjoyed just five years during college in the 60's on the Mineral Range, and I have NEVER gotten it out of my blood.. We share a special place with special people.......One guys opinion.........

YOur opinion is probably shared by many and for sure by one.

Last Friday at the courthouse in Eagle River, George Hite and I participated in a 'focus group' about bringing more broadband Internet to the Keweenaw. Several other Pasty.net members were there, including Janet Shea from Copper Harbor and Lani Poynter from Delaware Mine. George certainly appears in fine health, and had some good observations about the Internet, having established one of the first websites in the U.P. with a loyal following.

I can certainly appreciate the need to take a break from regular webmaster duties, as we have been involved with Pasty Central almost on a daily basis since 1996. When we committed to at least one daily picture beginning in 1998, it REALLY put our staff to work. George Hite, on the other hand, has maintained Eagle Harbor Web single-handedly all of these years.

A couple of other pioneers with U.P. content on the web are Charlie Eshbach of the Keweenaw Traveler, and Dan Urbanski with QuietlyWild. We are glad that all of these sites are part of the family here at Pasty Central.

Phyllis/Texas, hi! Yes, Von Maur took over the old Penney's several years ago, took over several other adjoining stores, and they're going great guns. Very nice place, I must admit.

When did you leave? The area along Randall both north and south is on fire with development (commercial & homes)!

The Hotel Baker will be sold at auction today. Quite a lot of history there. Also, I just learned that they're talking a major redevelopment of the downtown area--sounds exciting!

We were in the UP for a week and, as always, hated to leave. Yes, even a short visit does recharge one's spirit--we can't wait to move up there!

I've always believed that folks who feel it necessary to derogate those with whom they disagree do so because they have nothing of substance to say on their side of the issue. They're entitled, but I don't have to pay attention.

Though there are many different opinions on environmental issues, the fact remains that the land that was once accessable is no longer.The unfortunate thing is that the land is being bought up and soon no one but that land owner will be able to experience such a wonderful place.
Many of us who frequent the great outdoors have respect for the land and do not destroy what we love. However, there are those people who do not have that same respect and do not care who owns it...that causes most of the problems.
I think that it is up to ALL of us to teach that respect and maybe that will change some minds..or at least I hope it would !

I was reminded while reading a letter online today that no matter where we live it is "correct thinking" to realize that none of us own anything of this planet. God made the earth and He owns it and however much land we temporarily "occupy" it is because of Him that we can even say that! He moves people around to suit His purposes. The changes that are taking place there may only be understood years from now, upon reflection. God's ways are not "our" ways.

It is good to hear George H. is well. I miss the updates, but know the difficulties in maintaining a website. Just think all of you who host sites from the Upper Peninsula, should know how much you are appreciated and when we don't see something new posted, we begin to worry.

The skeleton was there last summer as part of an inside Eagle Harbor joke. The sign does not warn against drinking and boating, but rather says that she thought someone was just going to take her picture. We in Eagle Harbor like to take newcomers out to the bell buoy, tell them to get off the boat so we can take their picture and then leave them out on the buoy for awhile. I believe this is the jist of the skeleton. She got off for a picture and we forgot to go back for her. Her name is Matilda, named after a famous ghost from our cemetary. Alert travelers will find that Matilda has moved this year to another Harbor location. Have you spotted her yet?
