There were a few breaks of sunshine on may trip home from downstate yesterday, and one of them occurred just as I was passing one of my favorite places, Au Train. The bright sunshine on the golden grass against the dark clouds and sky was irresistible. Contrast is good, as long as it falls into the tonal range of my camera. That's Au Train Island in the distance. The second shot is the Au Train River's mouth. I like the way rivers meander when wind and beach create those gentle curves. It sure is taking a long path before emptying into Lake Superior right now.

Thanks for the great site, I visit everyday.
I just recieved my order of Pasties at work this A.M. As i was opening up the foil wrap you could smell them. Some of the guy's in the office were walking past my office, They stopped and asked "What smells so good?" Nothing like these out here in California.
Can't wait till dinner tonight.
Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Wow!! Beautifull. This looks like it could have been taken on a hot summer day. Oh, too go back to those days. I could just feel the sun on my back and the sound of the waves. I am soooo fortunate to live close to Lake Superior!

I must say these pictures are AWESOME! The colors are so simple, yet so perfect in the way they come together. This site makes me want to jump on a plane and come home! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I have some UP placemats that a gentlmen from AuTrain took. I haven't seen any in years I wonder if he retired. His photos were as great as the ones we enjoy on

patb, is it possible you are refering to Mr.Penrod...I've seen his great photo's around for years. Around here you can find his name on a multitude of MICHIGAN souveniers placed near the check-outlanes.

Unlike most of you, my history with the UP is short. It dates back to August 2000 when my husband, 2 dogs and I vacationed for a week in Shelter Bay, just down the road from Au Train. We spent many hours on the beaches along that stretch, gazing across the cold blue waters to the island and beyond, marveling that such a place as where we were existed. We've made many trips since ... Thanks for the photos!

We had a set of those place mats. I think Avery Studios took the shots and made the mats. Don't know if they are still around.

The pictures on those placemats from Avery Studios - Saranac, MI - sure portray the beauty of the U.P.

Hoyt Avery's outdoor photography is outstanding.

The store at the Pictured Rocks Cruises in Munising had some pretty placemats for sale. Don't know how late they stay open though.

That bank of clouds behind the island look like a HUGE wave ready to cover it all up!

Thanks for the photos of AuTrain Bay. I lived my first 8 years in AuTrain and remember great times on that beach -- only a couple minute walk from home.

I'm mostly a lurker enjoying the picutres and comments. My parents and I, then my husband, spent many summers and falls at Au Train. Fishing in the lake and swimming in the river. We stayed at Harrington's Harbor. Both Lefty and Lois are gone now, but now forgotten. Theses photos sure brought back memories. Thanks, Dan.
