My Dad used to have a boss at Detroit Edison named Ed Abfalter (down in Detroit, MI), and he was from Calumet.

Recently my Dad asked me if I knew anyone with the last name of Abfalter - so I am just curious (for him).

Wehad a super time in Calumet this summer, visiting with relatives. WE also got to the Copper City lunches, and the Class of '56 luncheons. Made many new memories. Hope to see you all again next summer.

Although I did not make it through high school, I really would like to hear from anyone that remembers me. I know I wasn't that populer, but I know there is some one out there.

I moved away in 89 to Arizona, now I'm back to help out my parents for awile. I have 2 kids in Arizona, one is 13 his name is Atrayou Sky, the other is 3 his name is Kougar Joseph. Anyway, I learned alot while I was gone, grew up fast and now I have a whole different outlook on life. Well, God bless everyone anyway and thank you for your time in reading my little note.

How bout "hitching bumpers " in the winter? Is there anyone out there who remembers the Halloween some out of uniform ROTC guys marched down Hecla Street, singing M-I-C- K- E-Y..M-O-U-S-E...put trash cans across 3rd Street? I just got back home from spending the weekend in North Carolina - I attended the funeral of my best friend who was killed in Iraq last Monday. Staff Sergeant Paul Joseph Johnson - "PJ" or "Peej" - CHS Class of '91 was one of the best people I've ever met - a natural born leader and just a great person. Just found this site. It's good to see some familiar names. Hello to those of you from the class of '75.

I just found this site and it was nice to see some names from the past. The messages show where people are living but not what is going on in there lives. After graduating in '75 I got my accounting degree from MTU and moved to the South. My husband Rob and I live in the Atlanta area.

Had a great time at the reunion in Calumet. Very nicely done by all who put in so much time and effort. The Armory looked wonderful! Is there another one in 3 years? Hope so!

Fantastic reunion in Calumet!!!!! A job very well done by the hard working alumni, we all do appreciate your dedication to the schools and community even if we didn't individualy thank each and every one of you. THANKS for all the great effort and organization, we did in fact have a great time.

I wish we could go back to those days..I loved working there and taking care of all our patients..(except for not having novacaine to fill teeth..things have really changed today in the dental field..thank goodness.) :o) What year did you graduate from school..I am trying to place you. Drop me a note sometime. I think of home often..I miss the U.P.and all the beautiful scenery.

I remember you as the very sweet dental assistant to Dr Anthony when I was a kid growing up in Laurium! I can still see and smell the office so vividly in my mind. And at "50 something" that is pretty good! I remember sqweezing your little hand so tight when he gave me a shot of "novocaine"(sp), which he only would give you when he extracted a tooth. And I had a few. That needle was enormous! I never had a tooth FILLED with anesthetic as his patient, he didn't believe in it for fillings. My Dentist today finds that hard to believe! You were a sweet comfort to many terrified little ones that sat in that chair. Dr Anthony didn't make me afraid of the "Dentist" though. Maybe I have a high pain tolerance! No really, I trusted him. He did a great job........ I still have all my teeth! Hope to see you at the all school reunion next month!

So many memories from Charles Briggs School! Mrs. Rosemergy, 2nd grade, was my favorite teacher, I think it was about the late 40's. I remember how someone had to walk outside and ring the bell before school started. I feel so fortunate to have attended that little school!

Like Peggy, I remember Mrs Bovee as my Morrison school kindergarten teacher. She had the patience of a saint. I recall vividly the tables we sat at and the little chairs. Amazingly I even recall the layout of the room...and playing with those great wooden puzzles. Fun memories of nearly a half century ago. If now I could only remember where I put my car keys this afternoon.

Mrs. Bovee was my Kindergarten teacher at the Morrison School more years ago than I will admit.

I remember Bullet and the other janitor Mr. Lucchesi (sp?) at Charles Briggs. Mr. Lucchesi always seemed to smile, Bullet was more serious (intimidating) as I recall.

The last year that Morrisson school held classes, was the 1996-1997 school year. The 1-5th grades then moved into the new elementary school, (which is connected to the high school) and the kindergarteners, now go to school in Mohawk. The old Mohawk Elementary school. I was in one of the last classes in Briggs school. I went there in '75 and '76. Then, "Bullets" was standing by the radiator everyday when we went in. He was the janitor.

Morrison School has been turned over to Coppertown and will become the new home of the museum.

Hi all of you Charles Briggs kids, Did any of you go to John Duncan just a block north of Charles Briggs? I started school there then Charles Briggs and then on to Washington School and finished in the class of '52' at the high school. DC Florida Location

What was wrong with the teachers like Lucy,Flora,Hatti,Mrs Foster,Mrs Lobb,Lucy Lang,the Sullivan sisters, Ida Blum,,and others as well,,you must not have cared for the disciplin. It is too bad that there are not teachers that care today, like there were in the 40's and 50's,,,,maybe the kids of today would should more respect to others and to their country!

Morrison school was still in operation when I was there as a 5th then 6th grader in '68/'69 & '69/'70. Does anyone on this discussion board know what year it actually stopped having classes?

Morrison has not yet sunk! Can't believe they
were saying that back in the '40's. I went 1-6
grades there and that was in the late 50's. As
of this summer it's still standing!

I sure remember Miss Grierson. She used to line us up in two columns in the cloak room and walk down the middle sniffing to see if anyone was eating anything. I was terrified of her. I can't remember the principal's name. She lived next door to the school.

I think the Morrison School was used for kindergarten thru maybe 6th grade all the way through the '50s. Then the kids all went to Washington School. Same with Charles Briggs. Beginning the seventh grade in Washington School, we had a bunch of "new" faces.

Someone recently made reference to the Morrison
School. I attended kindergarten there during
1943-44. We were sent to the Washington School for 1st grade because the Morrison School was sinking, or at least that's what we were told.
To my knowledge it was never used for classes after that. Drove by last July and it's still there!

My memories of Charles Briggs are Lucy Gearson(sp)& Ethel Sullivan. Not Pleasant!

The Charles Briggs fence is almost like a poured structure, seems like stampsand was used in the mixture the way the texture is. Did you play "rocks" where you sit on the fence where the steps go through at the school entrance and playground entrance and try to toss rocks into the pipes which come out of the ends? We used to play marbles in the alley by the fire escape. Not sure of the status of Morrison but it seems they are going to put something in there.

There was some talk of converting the old Morrison School in Calumet to apartments or condos. Anything more ever happen with that?

I also heard that there was a concern about the basic stability of the empty structure as it was reportedly sinking.

I attended Briggs only for kindergarten but I
have a vivid memory of it. especially the play-
ground and the brick fencing around. or was just
the building brick? then off the Morrison.

Charles Briggs still stands, lonely but proud. I believe it is currently owned by a local (Laurium) contractor, don't want to give his name as I am not positive. I walk past there quite often.

Call me mixed-up but I'm pretty sure that the Charles Briggs School building was torn down some time ago. Maybe someone in Laurium can verify and post here?

I still remember naps on little mats in Mrs Ronkinin's (not sure if I spelled her name correctly) kindergarten class. She was a sweet lady. Can we tour Charles Briggs during the reunion?

Charles Briggs still has the alphabet on the kindergarten room floor as far as I know. Last time I was in there was the summer of 1993.

I went to Charles Briggs 59 years ago from Kindergarten through 7th grade. I take our grandkids by there whenever we are up there telling them that's where their parents went to Kindergarten before going to the Washington grade school.

This is a blast from the past! My husband, Phil Hart (Rev. Charles Hart's nephew)-(the Troll)is the one who keeps tabs on Pasty.Com and he was telling me about this site. Ron Mixon, what a treat to read your name. I am so sorry to hear about your wife. I don't even know when you lost your folks or how your sister Patty is doing, but my sister Jan said she checked this out and hoped to hear from you. We just, Feb 28th, lost our mom (Martha Hillstrom Hocking Bryan) in Fort Myers, FL. We miss her very much, but we know her suffering is over and she is with the Lord (it has been almost 32 years since we lost our dad, Simon (Bud) Hocking). We had some great family time. All four of the sisters (we lost our brother John in 76) were able to be together to celebrate mom with some of the grandchildren. For all of the class of 68 out there, my mailing address is 311 Rimrock Court, Grand Junction, CO 81503. I am now in Jackson, TN, my wife's hometown. My age is 67 and I am a retired CPO, USN, 1951-55; 56-72 (20 + years). My son John Jr is now a retired CPO living in Grand Bay, AL with his family. He retired in December '99 at age42.

I belong a net which meets at 12noon-1PM EST on 14.283Mhz on Tues and Thurs following the Pearl Harbor Survivor's net. If any ham from up there (especially Mohawk) would check in, I would gladly move off frequency and have a ragchew.

Hi Martha, I was surfing and saw your message. I'm not on the committee for this reunion but I did receive some info in the mail. The 1981 class reunion will be held on July 7 and 8. Friday the 7th there is sign-up and get together at Shaun's Restaurant in Laurium. Saturday at 5 p.m. a class picture at the high school then to Shaun's for a 6 p.m. social hour, 7 p.m. dinner and 9 p.m. to midnight music and fun - (cash bar--pop and coffee free). Cost is $30.00 per person. Make checks payable to CHS class of 1981 and mail them to CHS Class of 1981 c/o 809 Elm Street Calumet, MI 49913. I'll ask the same question as Don LaVergne did on February 4. Does anyone know if a 20 year reunion is being planned this summer for the class of 1981?? I figured that since there was a 10 year reunion, that there would be a 20 year reunion, but I haven't heard a thing and thought that I would have by now if anything was in the works.

Looking for class of '78 grads and future reunions - could'nt make the 20 year.

I was upset that not many of the kids from the class of 75 wanted a class reunion. Here they took all the time to plan it and then hardly anyone wanted to come. It would have been our 25th. I was living in Michigan then, but now I am in Arizona, and I don't know when I will be able to make it again. I hope the class of 75 will not forget each other.

Hawaii here we come. My wife Helen and I are going to see Hawaii for the first time on Dec. 9-16. We will travel by air and cruise the Islands on the ms Patriot United States Lines vacation. Helen continues her life in spite of cancer, taking each day at a time. The Lord sustains her. Thanks for your prayers.

Wow, how neat to see a name I recognize - Gail Hooker! I only attended school in Calumet for 6th through 10th grades (class of '74), but still have many fond memories. I would love to get in touch with anyone who might remember those days! I've lived out of the area for most of the last 26 years, so have really been out of touch. I'm really hoping to visit the U.P. next summer - I'm just too homesick to wait any longer!!!

Had a great time at my 45 year class reunion. I graduated in 1955. Missed my old buddies Bob Forsberg and Bill Sincock. Would like all to keep my wife Helen in your prayers as we learned 08/14/00 her breast cancer has moved to her liver. She is in stage four with the cancer in the bones since 1997. The good Lord continues to sustain her.

Sorry I couldn't make it to the Reunion! I really had hoped I could. Family and committments made it impossible. Iwould, however, like to be kept abreast of any future events. I miss Calumet and always welcome an opportunity to visit.
