By
Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 12:02 am:

In case you missed Monday's Pasty Cam, we received the news that our friend and colleague Dan Urbanski had passed away. Where do we begin to tell how much Dan meant to all of us at Pasty Central? Quite possibly you would not be viewing this website today if not for Dan.

Pasty.com began in 1996 as a lighthearted look at the U.P., with occasional pictures of Upper Michigan sights, links, recipes and shots of our elderly residents at Still Waters making pasties. In 1997, Dan Urbanski began his wilderness diaries at QuietlyWild.com, becoming one of the first websites to receive the Golden Pasty Award. Early in 1998 my son Jonathan and I comitted ourselves to bringing a fresh picture every day to Pasty Central, a glimpse of life in the U.P. Little did we realize the effort and thousands of man-hours it would require to keep that commitment.

A few other amateur photographers joined us in those early days, but Dan was the first in the professional community to recognize our efforts with the "Pasty Cam". He stepped in to advance this labor of love by lending his insight and technical skill to the project. He breathed new life into this daily feature.

Dan Urbanski was a tireless worker and supporter of our work at Still Waters in Calumet. In this final decade of his life he inspired thousands by capturing the rugged beauty of the U.P., and encouraging others to do the same. I especially appreciated Dan often taking the initiative to do the daily picture and write-up on the Pasty Cam... just because he loved the U.P.

I've been in touch with Dan's wife Patty and she passed along the following words about his life and passions. He will certainly be remembered, and dearly missed:

Dan Urbanski
Daniel F. Urbanski, 50, passed away peacefully at home on August 13th after a long illness. He was born July 21st, 1954 in Hamtramck, MI, the son of Frank and Rose Urbanski. Dan graduated from Hazel Park high school in 1972.

Dan toured the Upper Peninsula and found that Silver City and Ontonagon County had the friendliest people and decided to put down roots. A self-taught photographer, Dan turned his "shutterbug" hobby into a business and opened Silver Image Studio in 1977. His work included the full range of portraiture, commercial and aerial photography, but he was probably best known for his outstanding "nature pictures." Dan knew where to go, when and under what conditions to capture Nature at her most photogenic. Wherever he went, he created images, and his interpretation of the Porcupine Mountains became the standard by which all such photos are judged. He was able to share his love of the area through stunning multi-image slide programs, which he set to music and presented throughout the Midwest. Dan was also selected in 1992 for an Artist-in-residence program at Isle Royale National Park. Urb's pictures have won numerous awards and he has been published in Backpacker, Midwest Living, Better Homes and Gardens and Lake Superior Magazine. His work has often been featured in Michigan Travel Bureau promotions.

His commitment did not end there, however. Dan was a driving force and tireless worker for the Porcupine Mountain Chamber and a founding member of the Friends of the Porkies. For eight years he was the voice of the "Friends" through the Quill newsletter, which he created.

Whether picking up litter on M-107, tallying ski-race results, or running a stable fly "trap line," Dan was the first to step up to the plate. Generous, intelligent, scientifically minded, curious,. Out-door enthusiast, mountain biker, kayaker, camper, hiker, photographer. Friend.

He was preceded in death by his mother Rose and survived by his father Frank, wife Patty, mother-in-law Elsie Taurianen, niece Sara Moilanen and numerous relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 22 at 2pm EDT at the AmericInn Superior View Restaurant (Paul's) in Silver City.

Thank God for people like Dan who are able to share their love of life with others who are photogenically challenged (and spelling challenged as well!) And for Mary and Charlie et al who so kindly allow us in for pleasure of the company. We do appreciate all of you dear folks!

I have Dan's work hung in several rooms of my house--such an eye and such skill. Such a loss to everyone.

We pasty folks offer our condolences to Patty, Sara, and others.

Major bummer.
Us yooper-wannabes

Dan's work a perfect escape.

Thanks, Patty, for sharing his passions.

By jim_greenville_mi on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 01:45 am:

charlie: PLEASE extend our(pastycam viewers) deepest heartfelt sympathy to the family of this great photographer, friend to all. thanks for his sharing of his unique love of yooper nature scenes. we are all better acquainted with spectacular images without having to into the wilderness( we couldn't phyically accomplish his feats). BUT, thru his work and his gifted eyes for photo subjects, we are truly blessed. his work will live on thru his magnificent photo collections. __†__

By Matt, Troy, MI on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 05:45 am:

Whether at home or at work, I keep a library of the WOW's, which feature Dan's work. How often I hear comments: "Where did you get that?!".

A window has closed on the UP, and we will miss the view terribly.

My deepest sympathies to Patty and all who loved him, and a heartfelt thanks for sharing him with us these past few years.

By Jim & Pam Calumet on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 06:15 am:

Our feelings are expressed in the above also. It was with a very sad heart reading about Dan passing in last evenings paper. As Charlie states above about the early days of pasty.com, one would know right away when a new photo appeared each day that which was one which Dan had taken. He had a knack and gift of capturing the view with his camera that he eyes beheld. God bless him, and also his family. Strange, it feels like I really lost a friend, even tho I did not know him personally. Jim Grill

This news is a shock this morning! Like Jim Grill, I feel I have lost a wonderful friend that I never knew. The pictures chosen to remember Dan by this morning are so stunningly appropriate. We should all be sad that Dan has gone on, but so wonderfully greatful that he past our way on his journey.

I feel honored to have known Dan and loved his work! We were at his studio just a few days before he passed away and purchased several pictures. Dan had a unique talent that was God given and he made good use of it, as we can all attest too! I have his pictures in almost every room in my house and even gave away his pictures for birthday and Christmas gifts. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. Anyone who know him, loved him and his work and he will be sorely missed by all. Thank you Pasty cam for featuring his work!!

A masterful eye and magical touch with a camera have been taken from us. Sympathies to Dan's family. You must keep his photo gallery page up and running, even if it's only past pictures. His photos have served as my wallpaper several times, to many ooh's and ahh's from co-workers.

By anon/milw on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 09:22 am:

I also, never knew Dan, but felt I did through his words and pictures both here and in his Quietly Wild wilderness diary. He will be sorely missed, having touched so many of our lives with his incredible talent. When I've been in a pinch to find a certain type picture for the daily shot, I knew I could always delve into Dan's Gallery and find just the perfect one! Thank you Dan, for inspiring us all.

And thanks Charlie, for such a fitting tribute...

By Missin the UP from NJ on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 09:30 am:

I, too, was shocked to hear of Dan's passing. I also pass along my deepest sympathy to Dan's wife and family.
His work stood out in such a way that those of us halfway across the country and in other parts of the world did feel we knew him. I've 'surfed' the net looking for nature pictures and can honestly say, I still haven't found a photographer who's work touched me the way Dan's work has.
Today, my heart is heavy. I, too, will miss a friend I never even met.

"Only the good die young." -- Billy Joel

My life begins everyday with the photo on pasty.com. I have bought the calendar since its inception. So much of both of these were enhanced by Dan, a true artist and nature lover.

Why don't a lot of us send flowers for his service on Sunday so Patty will know how much her beloved husband, Dan, is loved and will be missed?

By Jim R, Grand Rapids, Mi on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 12:02 pm:

I was always amazed what little piece of nature Dan Urbanski would find and capture as a thing of beauty - he changed the way I walk through a field or down a path, I always find mself asking, "what would Dan Urbanski see in that..."

Thanks for slowing me down Dan!

By Steve Brimm, Copper Harbor on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 12:09 pm:

Dan was a good friend and mentor. His work inspired me as it surely must have inspired countless fledgling photographers. When I visited Dan a few weeks back, I was so very hopeful that we would have another chance to wander around in the woods together. Dan will never expose another piece of film here on earth, but the Images he has left us with will illuminate our souls forever. We will miss you Dan

I love you brother

You've been looking for pictures for your calendar and asking for people to vote on the ones they like. Why don't you at pasty.com put together Dan's pictures for people to view then vote on their favorite ones. Then you could put together your calendar of his greatest photos as a tribute to Dan? That way everyone could enjoy having his pictures in their homes and or offices.I'm also saddened by death. My sympathies to his family.

Steve or Donn or Charlie, is there something that Dan loved that we can contribute to? Can we start a Dan Urbanski Fund for Patty, or one that would be a living memorial?

My Answer Is:
I am very aware that Dan thought very highly of Charlie, Stillwaters and the Daily Pasty Cam internet publication. Dan loved the beauty of flowers, landscapes where they grew, and recording them on film/digitally.My best bet is that he would rather have donations sent in his name to benefit Stillwaters.

A profoundly sad day, indeed. My sincere condolences to Patty, family and friends. Dan's work has been very inspiring to me and many hobbiest like me. Dan's memory will last through his work and those who love him. I am putting in my vote or an Urbanski calendar didicated to his memory.

By JAD, Oskar, MI on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 07:43 pm:

Charlie, I second the suggestion to keep Dan's website permanently on Pasty.com. It is a fitting memorial to such a gifted person, and would allow many of us to refresh our souls in the beauty he provided us.

By The Urban Escapees, MI on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 08:41 pm:

Our deepest sympathies to Dan's family. He has shared with all of us the truly talented gifts of his bright soul.

By Patty Urbanski, MI on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 08:43 pm:

Thank you to all of your for your love and prayers. Dan would
have been in awe of it all. He loved sharing his photographs with
the Pasty Central more than anywhere. He would be so excited
when he would get up in the morning, pour his coffee, sit down
at his computer and see that one of his photographs had been
posted. The pain of losing my best friend and adoring husband
is beyond words. I am only comforted by the fact that I have so
many wonderful memories and that we spent almost every
waking moment together the past several months, talking,
sharing, hugging and kissing.

I would like to share with all of you a poem that Dan wrote in
1982 and was published in a book titled "It Isn't Always Easy..But
Always Know That I Care" by Susan Polis Shutz.

When you're after more out of life;
when you're looking for the depth
and satisfaction few even know exist;
when you've got to do it your way;
and do it yourself, for yourself.....

sometimes the disappointment
is as deep
as the joy.
The important thing to remember
is that the real satisfaction
is in the trying....
and that I'm on your side.

-----Dan Urbanski

Prayers to all of you.

Patty Urbanski

Condolences to Patty Urbanski. Dan's contributions, as Charlie mentioned, were important in setting a standard of excellence that inspired others and which we regular visitors appreciate greatly.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dan Urbanski's passing. He is truly the only one who could capture the essence of my homeland and make me really feel it again, even if I'd been away for some years. I have several of his works in my home here in Ohio. Thank you, Dan, for sharing yourself and your vision with the rest of the world.

By Melissa, Lansing, MI on Tuesday, August 17, 2004 - 09:38 pm:

Thank you for your post, Patty. My condolences to you and your family. I too am a great fan of Dan and his photos. Although I did not know him, he has been a great inspiration to my delving into nature photography. I often thought that if one of my pictures could turn out half as good as Dan's, I would be thrilled.

Dan's photos spoke volumes about his love for the UP and its natural wonders, and I too think it would be fitting to dedicate the next calendar to him. I can't imagine a better tribute to someone who touched so many lives through his photography.

Patty,

While Dan captured and shared the beauty of the UP with us, these posts reveal something Dan must have known: the greatest UP treasures are those who live there......

Our prayers are with you.

Was reading on obit for my aunt Lempi Jolgren in the DMG obits and came across the one for Dan Urbanski. What a shock! Like others have said, it seems we lost a dear friend that we'd never even met, 'cept through his pictures. Our condolances and sympathies to Patty and the rest of the family. Thank you, Charlie, for introducing him to us. "Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling...."

Dan ... how can your loved ones ever not think of you in your beloved U.P.? When the slant of the sun shines in just the right direction, one might think the warm pressure on their back is merely the sun. But we will know it is your spirit guiding people ... helping them to capture the perfect shot ... reminding them to pause and notice the beauty in this world. You are with us for always, and you will always be appreciated. Thank you for touching my life.

And, Patty ... Shoulder's here for you whenever you need it. I wish you well sweetie.

I have not been visiting this website regularly lately. Then someone emailed me the news about Mr. Dan Urbanski today and I found he has gone.
Although I have never exchanged words with him, his eye inspired me and taught me a lot about what it takes to find the beauty of nature. My appreciation to Mr. Urbanski and to the people who have been visiting this website.

Being a fellow photographer I loved looking at Dan's work(passion). I was deeply sadden to hear of his death. I hope that all who knew him and loved him know that he has brought much joy to this world. I have a feeling that he will continue to have an effect on everyone that knew him. May God bless Patty as she deals with this loss.

Please extend my sympathy to the family of Mr. Dan Urbanski. Although I never knew him I truly feel that I have lost a friend and fellow Upper Peninsula nature lover. His photos are incredible and will be a legacy that we all can share and feel as though we walked where he did and saw what he saw. May God bless Patty and the rest of his family through this difficult time.

There is an ancient legend known by the people of Lake Superior. When an eagle flies over the site of a funeral service, the departed spirit is released. Yesterday we said goodbye to an artist, visionary, and friend. Dan was many things to many people, a kind and gentle man always willing to lend a hand. The service was perfect, with music, poetry, and Dan’s photographs. There was a large attendance of Dan’s friends from near and far. It was a beautiful celebration of his life. As we left the service I looked up to the sky.........and the eagle flew.

I try to get to the U.P. every fall and Lake of the Clouds at least once every two years. (If I don't, I get really cranky) My sister-in-law is a Hematite. I bought some of Dan's work three years ago. My thoughts are with Patty and his family.

By Frank, St. Charles IL on Monday, August 23, 2004 - 04:54 pm:

I've been grieving ever since I learned of Dan's passing. Like others have said, I feel like I've lost a really good friend I'd just not yet had the opportunity to meet.

I've hacked at photography for 45 or so years and even taught photography for a few years, trying to infuse students with a sensitivity to nature...to see the small things in life and nature, too--not just the grand vistas, big trees, horizon-to-horizon sunsets, etc. To learn composition, and how powerful light and shadow can be. I've been blessed to taken some nice pix, but nothing like what Dan was able to capture.

Dan "got it".

His eye for composition, light and shadow, and color was always spot-on.

I'm saddened I never met him, never had the chance to tell him how his photos moved me, and I never even just wrote a note to let him know. Now it's too late. We'll be up there in a month, and while we can buy another print, something will be missing.

Maybe now's the time for the rest of us to set our own standards higher because of the wonderful examples of Dan's photography and life. I'll try my best, that's certain.

Prayers and condolences to Patty, their families and friends, and Sara (also a talented photog). May He provide you with strength and love to help each other now and in the future.

By Deb K - MI on Friday, August 27, 2004 - 12:20 pm:

Rest in peace, dear Dan. It's obvious that you touched a lot of lives with your talent. My own son is going to study photography this year. It can be a powerful language, which you spoke so well. Blessings to your family.

By Irene, MI on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 - 11:39 am:

Dan had a wonderful God-given talent that we will all miss. He inspired us with his photography and his life - both quietly wild. I was priviliged to meet him at a Natural Areas Association seminar that included a tour of the Porkies and slides by Dan. I was hoping to go to one of his photo seminars. I regret that I didn't. My prayers are with his family and friends.
