Hey Toivo! I grew up in da UP next to a guy named Eino (Maki, believe it or not!). I heard an awful lot about you two while growing up!

After graduating from Tech in '82 I've worked my way to warmer weather and now live in TX, but visit home everyday via the Pasty Cam (and the Granite Island Lighthouse and MTU web cams). In fact I had a pic from my fishing trip on Lake Superior this summer posted on the pasty cam (sunrise on Shelter Bay).

Thanks for filling in and keeping the cam shots fresh while Charlie was away. Here are a couple of my favorites from a trip home, a shot of Green Creek (south of Ishpeming), and a shot taken on the road to the Hoist Dam power plant in Negaunee Township after a snowstorm.

Third day of the third month of the third year of the third millenium. A time of prayer for our Nation has been called for 3:33 this afternoon.

Judy, per your posting - "Third day of the third month of the third year of the third millenium." Next year we will have the 4th day of the 4th month of the 4th year of the 4th millenium or 04-04-04. Once a year.......I heard prayers were going out today at 3:03 p.m. So on 03-03-03 @ 3:03 p.m.

Bruce, Beautiful pictures above. I first thought pic #1 was the Covered Road near Redridge. Could have fooled me & guess you did.

Beautiful shot of the pines. Countless tree tops off into the distance. Could someone let me know if these are hemlock?

By rolling through Chicago, WBBM on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 08:08 pm:

I heard this on the radio, there are 333 days left in the year

By ILMHitCC on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 08:53 pm:

I wonder what calendar that radio station is using. My handy-dandy calendar figures 303 days left in 2003.

By Ken from da UP on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 09:22 pm:

Did you stop to pray today at 3:03?

By John -Canton on Monday, March 3, 2003 - 09:39 pm:

Love your site, however, should not religion and silly references to numbers be posted? Just asking.

There were a number of responses to John's comment. To continue in the discussion tread concerning religion,

Folks, you make me want to cry (homesick) with all the gorgeous pictures. The running water reminds me that smelting season is pretty close. I spent some fun and cold times on a riverbank dipping for smelt.

What a great job you do. Keep up the great work.

By Bruce Watters, TX on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 - 08:21 am:

The creek picture is taken standing along County Road 581 about 5 miles south of Ishpeming. To Katherine - the trees in the background are mainly spruce and balsam trees.

Thanks again to Toivo and Charlie for posting a couple of my favorite pictures. For you Yoopers who get to experience this type of beauty everyday these shots may seem pretty boring. However, when one only gets to partake in this beauty once or twice a year these scenes are special because just like the Pasty Cam they help maintain the connections!

By froggy on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 - 09:48 am:

Trees look like mostly spruce, balsam, firs. Wouldnt be surprised if some hemlock is mixed in but cant tell from photo. Also might find some tamarack as it is pretty low and wet. Interesting tree, the tamarack. Looses its needles every year.
All beautiful and smell so good too! Natures perfume.

By neg boy on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 - 10:19 am:

It you took the pic from the bridge there on 581 thats where 4 high school kids from IShpeming were killed the night of there graduation party about 6-7 years ago--they hit the cement--one of the hazzerds of bridges an trees in the U.P--TO bad snowmobiles dont no that--trees dont give much when you hit them

By Bruce Watters, TX on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 - 11:59 am:

This picture is of Green Creek or Greens Creek. The accident where four kids were killed occurred several miles south on another bridge which I believe crosses one of the branches of the Escanaba River.

Beautiful pictures Bruce! Thanks for sharing them with us. You certainly captured the feeling of being in the woods in the central U.P. The picture looking down County Road 581 does resemble County Road 510. We used to tie several ropes to the bumper of a van as we drove towards Big Bay and take turns dragging along behind the van and trying to knock each other into the snow banks... The last one standing was the victor! It is amazing that no body was hurt! When we got to Big Bay we would stop for a bowl of hot soup at the restaraunt at the Big Bay Hotel. Fun times... but with respect to the discussion of numerology.... isn't 3:03 pm actually the 15th hour of the day?? It would need to be 3:03 am to be the third hour of the day. oh well...

I so thankful that I found this site. I check out the photos everyday. (It all began with the photo of the man on a bike with a deer slung over his shoulder.) I have lived out west, and up in the mountains, but there is just something special about The U.P. and northern Wisconsin..

By 1000 miles past Chicago on Thursday, March 6, 2003 - 11:45 pm:

OOPS! Maybe it was 303 days.
