Past-E-Mail: Cam Notes - 2003: January: Jan 01-03
New Year's Day, Escanaba    ...scroll down to share comments
Photo from Mike Curtin

Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 07:54 am:

From the Highland Golf Course in Escanaba, Mike Curtin says, "What does Florida have that the U.P. doesn't?!" I wonder if they've had any snow overnight?. Maybe somebody could give us an update. We had a dusting here in Eagle River.

This is the 5th New Year's Day we've celebrated on the Pasty Cam. Hope it is a prosperous and healthy one for you and your family. Could I ask a favor? If you've been a visitor to this daily feature for some time, and have never posted a message, please scroll to the bottom of this page and leave a New Year's hello, and let us know where you're from. It is optional to leave your email address, but a nice way for old friends to get in touch.

Special note: We've had a number of requests to restore the "Past-E-Mail" page, where you can post a message which pertains to the entire month, not just the daily picture. Feel free to use PastyMail for any feedback, questions or comments which you prefer to be seen with each month's posting.

In PastyMail we'll try to bring you updates on the Resident Van project for Still Waters. There was a burst of individual gifts online yesterday, which put us much closer to the purchase of a new vehicle. Still Waters is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, and all contributions are tax deductible. Thanks to everyone who has joined this effort.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all who make this site possible.
I have only been on-line since there were 40,000 pasties made. I thought, "Holy Wah! 40 thou pasties"!
This is from the snow-less Stephenson, MI area.
Pasty Central is by far the best site I visit at least once a day and the closest to a chat room I know how to get into. Really enjoy the comments and the pictures. You do such a wonderful job with this site.

By BWS- T.C. MI. on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 08:51 am:

Charlie- I have been daily viewing this site since mid-1996 when I found it while cruising a search engine for pasties. I've posted two messages that I can remember during that time, so maybe I don't quite qualify as a non-poster. But I thought that I would send along my sincere and heartfelt thanks for all of the pleasure that you have given me with this site over the years. I have computers at work and here at home- every one has ever-changing wallpaper with a scene from PastyCam. Although I wasn't born in the U.P., I spend a lot of time there and my heart yearns for each and every new visit. Thanks again for a wonderful site and may God Bless you, yours and everyone at Stillwaters in this new year and beyond.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:13 am:

We certainly welcome everyone to write a message today, even old friends. Your note reminded me of the first pasties we ever shipped in August of 1996. I believe it was to a family in Valparaiso, Indiana. Back then we hadn't started the daily pictures yet, only the shots of the residents peeling veggies. And that's the way the whole thing started.

By Yank, Michigan on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:22 am:

Charlie, I have been coming to Pasty.com since sometime in 1996 and I still keep the site as my homepage. I visit several times a day and really enjoy it. It is fun to read the messages and see where they come from. I have a daughter who lives in North Carolina, and she visits pasty.com to get a glimpse of where her Dad lives. Keep the site going because it makes a lot of people come together from all over the world. I wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

By Joe, Aurora, IL on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:31 am:

How'd I start my year? (you ask) I got up, checked the pastycam, reluctantly took down my 2002 pasty calendar and gleefully hung the 2003. It inspired me so I then planned a trip UP north this month to visit friends at Lac la Belle and the Eagle Lodge. Ok.... I'm ready for the year. Happy New Year everybody. Let's meet here often. Charlie your comments this morning "sounded" much more relaxed.

By Doug, Brookville, OH on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:32 am:

I've been visiting the site for at least 3 years now, but rarely post. So maybe it's time to echo the sentiments of so many, as to what a blessing this site is for so many people. Not just with the beautiful photography, but also with the information and knowlege that can be gained from the people who visit. My thanks to all who make this possible, Charlie and contributors. I continue to visit the UP at least once or twice a year, with dreams of someday making it my permanent home.

By Pam, Apple Valley, MN on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:47 am:

Like Joe, I started my day by checking Pastycam and replacing my 2002 pasty calendar with the beautiful new 2003. Just wish I were planning a trip to da UP, too! Thanks, Charlie and all, for making this my favorite site--a place I can go in the middle of a busy day to find tranquility, beauty and smiles. Happy New Year!

By Carol, MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 10:12 am:

Happy New Year! I visit this site daily and really enjoy it. Thank you

By Martha K., Pinckney, MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 10:13 am:

Good grief! If golfers are playing on green courses in the UP in January, Hell must be freezing over!

Happy New Year everybody!

By Toivo from Toivola on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:52 pm:

You may be right - - I notice that it was below freezing where you are today, and Hell is right around the corner from Pinckney.

Here's Hell

By Mike McCarthy, Michigan on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 11:08 am:

I've been a regular visitor since '97 when my son was at da Tech. Orginally from Escanaba and now from the land of wimpy winters (although yous guys aren't doing much better dis year, eh), Kalamazoo, I enjoy the memories, history, and photos. The pics of the Keweenaw and Superior are always spectacular and the occasional ones of Esky are a bonus. Happy New Year, Charlie, and thanks for your work and care to produce such a warm and friendly site.

By JoAnne & Dave Stefanac, Port Orchard, WA on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 11:43 am:

Hey Charlie and all the other Pasty.com visitors!

I love this site. Literally the first cyber stop I make every single day and usually have Pasy Cam pictures on my screen as wallpaper. Nothing like a glimpse of "home" shining from my computer screen!

Charlie, thank you so much for all your efforts in running this site. It is such a wonderful place to visit. Like going home. All the best in this New Year and may we all pray for Peace on Earth. --JoAnne

By Jill Murphy, Langhorne, Bucks County, PA on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 11:59 am:

Happy New Year, Charlie, and to all the people who visit and post of this site. An Internet friend who lives in Chassell introduced me to this interesting site in the spring. Since then, I start each day off with a visit to the U.P. The photos and captions provide me with a glimpse of the beautiful place my friend calls home. I am also an activities director at an assisted living residence and enjoy reading about the residents at Stillwater. Thanks for giving us the wonderful daily gift of this unique site. Much joy and happiness in 2003.

By Truman Hagbloom, St. Croix, USVI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 12:01 pm:

Happy New Year to you and your staff. Thank you for your site and community services and communications. Your site helps me to stay in touch with my homeland where I will retire to in in the near future.

Happy New Year to all from the Fallers in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

By Tater, Ypsilanti, MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 12:08 pm:

Happy New Year everyone. I would have posted earlier but I was up until 3:00 a.m. playing Monopoly. Probably just be waking up now if it wasn't for the phone ringing several times with Happy New Year wishes from Family.

I'm also one of those that has pasty.com set as their homepage at home. I'd do this at work too but I'm a good corporate citizen and keep the company's Intranet start page as my homepage. Not sure when I first starting visiting pasty.com but it's been years.

The near 7" of snow from Christmas Day has finally melted away in Ypsi. Now it's brown, gray, and green out.

I hope 2003 will be a special year for everyone!

Happy New Year to all...Yoopers and Trolls, Sconnies, and the rest of the country! :) Please pledge this year to follow the footsteps of our dear Lord and care for ALL His children. Pray for peace and keep the home fires burning, where-ever you call home. Remember your values and live up to them every day. Be thankful for each day and don't forget to tell those dear to you how much you love them. A quote my fav movie, Where the Heart Is, "Our lives can change with every breath we take...we've all got bad in us, but we've got good in us, too. And the only part worth living for is the good..." Thank you Pasty Central for the loving devotion you so artistically share with us and Still Waters each day. Happy New Year!

By Joann Barnard, Howell, Mi on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 01:39 pm:

Happy New Year to all! Pasty.com is the best. I have to check it every day. And every day proves to be so interesting. Makes me want to be up there. We usually go twice a year. I'm not from the U.P. but both of my parents were, so my roots are there. Keep up the good work!

By Marc, offshore GoM/Tamarack City on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 01:42 pm:

Good morning and Happy New Year, everyone!!
I'm on the noon to midnight shift and as I do every morning since going to sea in 1997, first thing, I've logged on to check the Pasty Cam:) Your site is a blessing for those of us removed from the Copper Country. Thank you Charlie and everyone at Pasty.com, posters, readers, photographers and all.

By Grandmas Pasties, Minneapolis, MN on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 01:53 pm:

Happy New Year to all our friends and partners at Pasty.com. 2003 will be our 7th year at the Minnesota State Fair and we have been proud members of the Pasty Central family for 4 of those years.
Imagine, when we first talked 7 years ago about possibly being our supplier (you didn't have your USDA yet) that our needs would grow to 12,000 pasties. Remember the year before last when our order put you over 100,000 pasties, Charlie, and we served number 100,000 at the Minnesota State Fair?
We now sell pasties year round in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Best wishes to all for a healthy and properous 2003. **** Sandy and Chuck ****

By Bill P , Ca on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 02:09 pm:

When I was a boy I heard men talking about the mild weather the Copper Country experienced at the end of December 1913, the year of the Big Strike. They talked of moving tables out of the Sweet Shop, owned by the Jasskelainen family in Ahmeek, and playing pinochle out on the sidewalk on New Years Eve afternoon. That was 89 years ago. Looks like warm weather visits Keweenaw every 100 years or so.

By Lynne,DeKalb,IL on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 02:16 pm:

Happy New Year from Illinois! We feel that the UP is our home away from home (we try to get up there to the Porkies for every season) and the Pasty Cam is the first thing we check each day on the computer. Thanks for the bit of beauty each morning.

By Helen G., Kansas on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 02:43 pm:

Hello from Leavenworth, Kansas. (No - We're not "inside the walls"!) I've been checking on Pasty Cam almost daily for 3 1/2 years and love seeing all the beautiful photos of my home state. Though I'm not a "Yooper", my heart is in the U.P. We spent our honeymoon there in 1969 and have been back only once (to the U.P) since then. Also spent time there as a child. (I get back to Michigan at least once every year.) The scenery is always beautiful. Thanks to all the contributing photographers!! I always say I'm getting my daily "Michigan fix" when I check Pasty Cam.

By Mike Pini Kingsford Mi. on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 02:45 pm:

Mike Curtin. Just sitting at my computer at work, wishing I could be there to join you for a round of golf. Great pic for those who think the UP is always under a blanket of snow. Not a flake of snow in Kingsford either. Going to the lake Linden area this weekend in search of SNOWMOBILE weather. Happy New Year to Charlie and all who visit the "PASTY". Gotta love this site

By Brian, TC on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 02:50 pm:

Well. I decided I better write something too...I have been following your site for sometime...I spent all my young summers at my grammas farm in Bootjack...The Copper Country is the greatest place on earth as far as I'm concerned...We enjoyed some of your pasties as a winner of the snow contest on the Eagle Harbor site...they are delicious...I don't order too many because I come from a family that has and still does make pasties...all the time. My aunt & uncle in Detroit make hundreds every month at their chirch as a fundraiser for the church. But keep up the great work..not only on the pasties but on the awesome site...I love it!!

By Ken, Kalamazoo, MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 02:58 pm:

Happy New Year to all. I started visiting this site back in '97 when my son started at MTU. Now I visit at least once a day, usually 2 or 3 times a day. Such a beautiful area to live in. We'll be coming up in February for Winter Carnival and try to get back 2 or 3 times a year for vacation or a weekend getaway. It's always great to be back in the Keweenaw whenever we're there. See ya soon.

By Mike, MS on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:08 pm:

Let me add a comment as a new comer. I have only visited this site for about the last six weeks, but I am hooked. Great job. I have just accepted a job at MTU and will be moving to the UP next June. I am really looking forward to getting back up north, especially after seeing the great pictures on pasty.com. Happy New Year to all.

By John, Chicago IL on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:08 pm:

Happy New Year's Charlie! I've been following your site daily for over four years now, but only posted twice before. I found your site when I started dating my girlfriend, who grew up in Calumet, and she took me to the Keweenaw for the first time. Now I travel up north five or six times a year and miss it when I'm not there. That's where your site keeps me there when I'm not. Seems like the small WI town I grew up in. As others said, I just hung my 2003 calendar and am looking at the picture of the lift bridge now!

By ILMHitCC on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:17 pm:

Happy New Year, all!! It may be bare in Escanaba, but do not fear, snow-seekers, the Keweenaw ski and snowmobile trails await you with plenty of it, groomed and ready!! Pack up your gear and head to Copper Harbor!

By longing for the UP on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:24 pm:

After returning home from celebrating the New Year's arrival with family and friends at Lake Tippecanoe in northern Indiana, I found your request for a New Year's hello.

I look forward to checking in with Pasty Central to get my UP fix every day. It helps tide me over till I next return to God's country.

I have visited the Pasty Cam for several years now, have enjoyed pasties from Still Waters, and posted but once......you directed my students' ice construction questions to Patrick Coleman, whose thoughtful answers will be used again soon when my third graders and I study ice buildings. Your readers were so kind as to give us additional information on ice building, cutting, and sculpting, and fun links to investigate regarding this topic. Thanks again to all who helped us.

I have grown to enjoy the comments and discourse almost as much as the photo glimpses of UP life that spawn such interesting posts. I'm still learning....

A note to Karen in Oshkosh, WI, who posted a response regarding our ice sculpture questions--I grew up in Jonesboro, and still teach there, but live right behind the hospital on Spencer Avenue. Were you still living here in Marion (and your house still standing) we would be neighbors. The world keeps getting smaller....

Charlie and Edie, thanks again for the joy your gift brings to me and so many others.

Health, Happiness, and Prosperity in 2003

Been visiting your site for a few years now. I'm retired from the Coast Guard. Lots of relatives in the Copper Country. My folks are from Bootjack and Jacobsville. Was stationed on Rock of Ages Light, Passage Island Light, Huron Island Light. Along with Portage Station and Marquette Station. Love Pensacola but will always love the U.P. Happy New Year All!

By Chuck Clarkston,Mi on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:52 pm:

I check this web site at least once every day. It is a wonderful site and it is great to see pictures of home. The Keweenaw will always be home to me, no matter where I live.

Have been working on my house, The Money Pit, outside of Dollar Bay now for about 5 years. Hopefully it will be ready when I retire in about 10 years.

Christmas Eve my wife informed me that we had run out of Baroni's spagette sauce and Vollwerth's meats. Had to make a resupply run on Christmas day. This is one of the better excuses I have used to get back home. It was great to be back, even for only 2 days.

Charlie,I like that name, you do a wonderful job with this web site. It makes me home sick but I thank you very, very much for your hard work keeping this site up and running for all the displaced Yoopers.

Happy New Year to all.

By Mary Ann, WY on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:55 pm:

Happy New Year from Wyoming! I visit the web site every day to check out the beautiful photos, and have also left messages several times. I grew up in the UP, and find that in the summer I miss not being by the Great Lakes. I was surprised to see no snow in Escanaba. We have snow here, but not as much as we usually do. Strange weather. Last night when we were out for dinner, I ran into a lady that also lives here and is originally from the UP. We discussed pasties, and I informed one of the people that was with her about Pasty Central. I will keep visiting your site, as it brings back good memories for me. Love those pasties!

By bc, Florida on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 03:57 pm:

Happy New Year to all the fans of Pasty Central, and especially to you, Charlie, for providing us with a daily serving of "God's Country".
My folks raised us in Detroit, but we spent 2 weeks every summer "up home", usually at Little Traverse Bay. I have the fondest memories that live on with my kids, although we can only manage to get to the UP every couple of years.

Taking up your invitation to those of us who have never, or perhaps rarely, post. We, like so many, regard Pasty Cam a daily treat - and sometimes, a little 'retreat'. Happy New Year to you and yours, as well as those at Still Waters and the people who make this site what it is: Fresh air.

By RT, MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 05:38 pm:

My first visit was in 1947 with parents and camped at Copper Harbor. Went back 10 years later for four years at MTU. Have been back several times since, but coming here takes up the slack between trips. Thanks.

Charlie, I really enjoy this site. My wallpaper usually is a picture from Pasty.net, and gets changed every 2 days or so--beautiful scenes! Keep up the good work! Someone said the other day Pasty.net was going wireless--true? If so, how do I go about getting hooked up? (People get a little aggravated when they keep getting a busy signal on the phone.) HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

Happy New Year!!

I discovered this site last year as a freshman at MTU, and i visit daily. It's nice to see pictures of the area i call 'home' now, even when i'm back downstate for the holidays with family. I check to see if we have any snow up there, since it's warm and snowless here in Redford. It would be a shame to have a broomball season without any snow!! And what would Winter Carnival be like without all that white stuff?! Keep up the good work, i really enjoy the pictures and posts. :)

Happy New year from Corvallis, Oregon.
I vist this site almost daily. I am a Toivola native and
moved away for the last time in 1977. Seems Yoopers
move away several times before a move finally sticks?
Some people even then move back to U.P. after twenty
or more years.

I like Oregon a lot and plan to stay here. No rain today
but somewhat cool for these parts. 48 degrees and dry.
Rain forcast for the next ten days however.

"HAPPY NEW YEAR" to each and every one. A special one to "Charlie" and his family and all the people at PASTY.NET. Its brown and turning nasty here in Missouri but supposed to change overnight with a big storm comeing in. If I could I'd ship all the snow up to the U.P. so that you all could enjoy your snowmobiles.

By SP, Ann Arbor on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 08:20 pm:

Charlie, Edie, and all other staff and residents
at Stillwaters/pasty.com--I've sent a couple of
messages in the three years or so that I've
visited the site almost daily but wanted to also
respond to today's request. I greatly
appreciate your site--and have ordered
pasties (excellent!) and contributed to the
Stillwaters fund in the past (re. contributing, I
hope for a better year financially in 2003 so
that I can afford a direct contribution a year
from now). Thank you so much for bringing
images of the U.P. to its Internet fans
around the world--and best wishes for this
new year to all!

Happy New Year from central Illinois. If you are lacking from snow we are suppose to be getting some in the next 24 hours you can always come down to the flat land. Thanks for all the great pictures. I have friends that work at MTU and have visited several times. It's beautiful in the UP!

By Jim from Columbus, Georgia on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 08:25 pm:

Happy New Year to everyone!

By Jan R on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 08:35 pm:

Love the Pasty website, the pictures, etc. Brings back many memories. Happy New Year from an ex-Yooper, in Arlington Heights, IL

By sk, michigan on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 08:40 pm:

I am a faithful daily visitor too. You can take the person out of the UP but you can't take the UP out of the person. Just returned from a visit to South Range my hometown and enjoyed some homemade pasties and Ambassador pizza. Ahh what a combination. Happy and Healthy New Year everyone. Charlie keep up the wonderful job.

By Peg, Fair Haven, MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 08:53 pm:

I have enjoyed this site for over a year. Hope all have a Happy New Year. My mom was born in Trimountain, and raised in Painesdale. We always went up home for our vacation. My grandmother lived in Houghton, I spent many summers enjoying the beach bus to Sun o Shine. Keep up the good work, always enjoy the pictures, and memories.

By Jan, North Carolina on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:10 pm:

A very Happy New Year from another frequent visitor to this site. I am one of the many people who grew up in Marquette, "two blocks from the Lake". Your site reminds me that I'm still a yooper, regardless of how far below the Mason Dixon Line that I live.

By JJ, Iowa on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:15 pm:

Happy New Year! From the Hawkeye State, Iowa. I visited the UP on vacation in 1998 and fell in love with Lake Superior. I visit this site daily to see all the beautiful photos and enjoy reading all the e-mails. I hope to return for a vacation someday.

By KSarkki, SF, CA on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:32 pm:

Pasty Cam, and the UP in general, is a great
antidote to the big city blues.
Love what you are doing, look forward to the
next five years. Happy New Year Pasty Cam.

By Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 09:42 pm:

Seasons greetings from Baltimore. Keep up the great work Pasty cam! Rainy all day here with the total of about 2". Oh....if it could only be snow!

By FHC and NLC on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 10:02 pm:

Happy New Year to all from Fl. We spend the winters here, and I check the Pasty Net every day. Really enjoy it. Thanks to everyone that send in all the great pics and sayings.

By Alex Tiensivu on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 10:18 pm:

Is this page out of room for more messages yet? :) HAPPY NEW YEAR U.P.

By SuzieQ, illinois by born, yooper by choice on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 10:32 pm:

Happy New Year to everyone at Pasty Cam! and ditto on the great pics all year that keep us coming back and coming up there.

By EH in Chesterton, IN on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 10:39 pm:

I tune into Pasty.com at least once a day. It's great! The photographers are super. What you're doing for Still Waters is admirable. I've seen pictures of Charlie, Jonathan and Dan. Can we see photos of the Z-man (maybe I missed it?) and Toivo? I live in NW Indiana, 50 miles from Chicago near Lake Michigan. We love Michigan and the UP! Lake Superior is so different than Lake Michigan. Happy new year to everyone! May it be a healthy, peaceful one.

By JimR, ShawnR, AimeeR, GR MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 10:54 pm:

Happy New Year to everyone. We've been pastycam fans for a long time, probably as long as you've been on the net! Its always been a favorite in the Rathbun home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. MTU '81, MTU '82, MTU 2005.

By Lee, Mi on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 11:21 pm:

Happy New Year, May it be a peaceful one.

By Luke S. - Chatham, MI on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 - 11:53 pm:

Been visiting this site regularly since this past summer, but never have left a message. I just loved looking back through all of the pictures from the previous years. One area of the U.P. that I never traveled that much is the Keweenaw Peninsula, and after seeing all of the pictures from the area, I think I must. Here's wishing all a very happy and prosperous New Year! :-)

Nostalgia comes in many forms. I believe that is my Dad's old horse pasture in the background.

By Jennie Largin Daniell , Dallas, Texas on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 12:23 am:

I have enjoyed your site almost daily for the past year or more. I've live in Dallas since 1979... a lot to do here, but it's no match for the beauty of the U.P.! Unfortunately (but fortunately for my husband! haha) golfing year round is something that is really done here in Texas! Thanks for all the beautiful pictures that keep the memories alive.

By Ken and Betty Colborn, AZ on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 12:30 am:

I have to add from Sun City, AZ A HAPPY and BLESSED NEW YEAR to all Pasty Cam people. Especially to Charlie and his wife, whom I sure is as involved as he is on here and at the home. As many other people have written, I go to this site, many times a day just to see what people have written in. There is so much history on this. Keep up the good work Charlie and may our Lord bless you richly for all you do and your great testimony on here.

By The Z-Man, Ontonagon,Mi on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 12:30 am:

Holy Wah, Took a long time to get to the bottom of this page. Wishing all a Happy New Years from the Z-Man.

By Roxanne in Roseville, MI on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 02:51 am:

and my Mom, Dorothy (Roseville too), are regular visitors to PastyCam. My sisters Diane and Carolyn are occasional visitors too. Mom Dorothy was born/raised in Hancock ... and we all visited the UP often enough to all feel like transplanted Yoopers!

jb myrtlebeach,sc...Looks like golf in Escanaba is taking the place of the snowmobiles!!! Great.

By Mike B, Pittsburgh, wishin I was still in the Yoop on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 06:50 am:

You ain't kiddin' Z-Man. I was scrolling forever to get to the bottom. Great to see all the first-time posters who've been visiting Pasty.com over the years. Happy New Year to all.

By Steve, West Bloomfield MI on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 07:11 am:

Happy New Year, Charlie! I'm also a daily viewer but have never posted. My wife and I are both MTU grads ('86/'88) and visit the Keweenaw at least twice each year. The photos on this sight are so good it's almost like being there. Keep up the phenomenal work.

By Rick Staszewski LaCrosse, WI on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 07:56 am:

Happy New Year to everyone! I try to visit Pasty.net daily. I discovered the Keweenaw and the U.P. in 1974 and have visited the U.P. at least twice a year. I simply love it and all you youpers! God Bless

By Mary Schei, Florida on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 08:10 am:

Happy New Year to all at Pasty Central and to all who enjoy this wonderful site. Like others who have posted I'm a far away from home Yooper who enjoys the year-around warm weather in Florida but still checks the pasty cam daily for a dose of home. My father, Cap Schei, had a bakery in Lake Linden until the early '60's and made the best pasties (sorry guys) I ever had. And as the old saying goes, "You can take the girl out of the Copper Country but you can't take the Copper Country out of the girl" I celebrated the New Year with family and friends - many of them also from the UP - enjoying pork pie with chow chow. May 2003 bring health and happiness to us all.

By Carol Greene, Quebec on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 09:09 am:

Like Jean from Abilene, I am curious about the reaction in Escanaba to the moonlight film. I rented it out of curiosity. ???? I think it was a plot to keep the hordes of tourists away.

By Jason, Louisville, KY on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 10:05 am:

I'm from northern lower MI and have recently moved to Kentucky. I log on every day to Pasty to see how things are in the U.P.

I visit pasty.com daily for a few years.Love the sight & the calendars! Living in Shawano Wisconsin now so this is my little slice of "home" everyday. I still make it home to Lake Linden several times each year...waiting for snow so I can make my next trip with my snowmobile! No snow in Shawano yet. Hi to my Mom-Rae Louise Matson-Hope to see you this month! LET IT SNOW!

By Deep in Houghton on Thursday, January 2, 2003 - 12:31 pm:

Well, since you asked for all of us to log in & comment,I decided to make my first response. Your site is a fun place to visit, especially the comments to the old shoebox photos. Don't know when I first started checking the site out but only within the last year or so. I enjoy the local info and the comments from around the US and world. Happy New Year to all you wannabe yoopers out there as well as the rest of you up here in God's Country. Nice job, Charlie and keep up the good work.

just wishing everyone a New Years that hopefully will be a peaceful one without any fear.
Phoenix was sunny and in the 70s, its because of days like this we tolerate the summer here.

To Jean, "Escanaba in DA Moonlight" real bad but somewhat funny in away.Alot of beer drinking in our camp after the guns where put away but in Da Moonlight camp it's not like any deer camp I've been for last 40 years. It gave a poor image of the deer hunters I know, stupid we are NOT!

By mdk, CA on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 05:59 pm:

It has been a busy Christmas with family and friends visiting. One group left yesterday and I just put my daughter on a plane - I'll see her next Christmas. House feels terribly empty. But I will console myself with pictures from the UP as I browse through the photos and comments made this past week.

I also join the many who thank you, Charlie, for your dedication in running and maintaining this site.

By Nancy Blom, MN on Friday, January 3, 2003 - 11:15 pm:

I discovered this site last year. Have to tell my family about it because I think they'd really enjoy it also. My dad grew up in Calumet, so us kids were exposed to UP early in life. Yeah! He bought his parent's house, so he goes up when he can. I still go up there for a vacation every other year. Lots of good memories.

This is a great site. Thanks for your work on it.

By SD Michigan on Saturday, January 4, 2003 - 09:36 am:

I stumbled upon this site a few months ago and check it regularly. Have passed it along to friends and family who also enjoy it as much as I do. Thank you and keep up the great work! I grew up in Hubbell and now live in Escanaba.
