Kevin and Mandy Rathbun brought their snowshoes along for a visit around the Bete Grise Preserve. They of course had to check out what the Mendota Lighthouse looks like decked out in winter white. Then as they were walking out along the shoreline a bald eagle flew out from the trees and circled around.

The thing that amazed them the most though, was the neat ice/sand formations on the beach. In places it was just white frozen ice, but in other spots, the sand had been stirred up and frozen in place, forming layer upon layer of sandy ice. Their last photo is my favorite of nature's icy creations. That's a small ice ball that formed around a piece of beach grass. A solitary droplet of Lake Superior, frozen in time... pretty neat, indeed!

These are some nice pictures! This is a privately owned lighthouse isn't it?

I really 'like' that lighthouse!
Thanks for braving the cold and sharing the neat photos, Mandy.

SO COOL!!

I like the neat patterns in the frozen sand. I think it is a shame all lighthouses can't be preserved.

Everything is awesome, but the sand layers are the best

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, December 8, 2014 - 11:41 am:

The Mendota Lighthouse is privately owned and very sadly is off limits to the public.
