If you're traveling along US 2 on the eastern end of the highway, you'll pass over the Cut River Bridge, between the towns of Epoufette and Brevort. It was built in the 1940's, with construction beginning in 1941 and finishing up in 1947, when the bridge was officially opened. There is a tunnel underneath the bridge so you can cross to the other side of the parking area, without having to worry about the traffic going over the bridge.

Our family stopped there recently, so we could stretch our legs and stretch them we certainly did, walking down the 231 steps to Lake Michigan. That was the easy part... it was the climb back up that was the challenge. Our grandsons, enjoyed a little dip in the lake before they tackled the steps to get back up to the top again.

Once back on the bridge, we enjoyed the view from 147 feet above the river valley, looking out at Lake Michigan and the beach where the boys had just dipped their toes in to cool off. You can see from the last photo, that it is quite safe to be on the bridge with the traffic zooming by, since there are walkways along both sides with guardrails to protect pedestrians.

If you're up to climbing steps, it really is a nice place to take a break from driving. Even if you can't do the steps, the view from the bridge - along with the view of the span from underneath - are worth the stop.

Doing the update this morning, I threw in that last photo from the archives, at no extra charge. It's one of my favorites, from Tim Colborn, held by his Dad back in the day, when beavers used to make the signage :o)

Nice shots and thanks for the hike! Coming from the L.P., I figure I've crossed that bridge at least a hundred times, there and back.

Husband and I visited that bridge one time, but.....we didn't 'do' the steps!;-/
Thanks, Mary.

I always make it a point to stop at the Cut River
Bridge and was just there last week! On this trip I
discovered that the paths are a nice alternative to
taking the steps back up. It's a great place to
stop
if you're traveling with a dog too! There used to
be
a sign at the top of the steps telling how many
steps there are, but I didn't see it this time.
Thanks for the pictures!

we stopped at that bridge. we went down to the tunnel but, we did not go down the steps to the water, as bill would say, 'you have to come back up those steps.':O)

Nice pictures. It's always fun to share your
pictures with others. Thanks for doing that. I
love that area. Hope to get down that way again
soon.
