Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, June 1, 2014 - 10:05 am:

A couple of days ago I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon on top of Sand Hills Lighthouse on Five Mile Point Road here in the Keweenaw. As the video says, my mission was to upgrade the broadband relay equipment that serves the lighthouse, as well as neighbors in this remote corner of the peninsula. For over a decade Pasty.NET has taken this co-op approach of serving users by relaying from member to member the signal that originates in Calumet - where it jumps to fiber, and the rest of the world. The size of the area and the sparse population has made such measures necessary, being unattractive to outside investment from large corporate providers.

The newer generation equipment is much more compact and efficient, as seen in the last pair of before-and-after photos. We did see an immediate improvement in throughput, and I'm sure it will be more reliable with better waterproofing and fewer components subject to failure. We have seen several generations of improvement during the Pasty.NET years.

Sand Hills Lighthouse is a wonderful Bed and Breakfast on the shore of Lake Superior where you can travel back in time to the maritime days of the Copper Boom. If you love the Keweenaw and its history, it is an experience you don't want to miss. Our thanks to Bill and Mary Frabota for the great times we have had there over the years, and for helping extend the Internet where otherwise dial or satellite have been the alternative.

Have a good week :o)

What a view! Appreciate all the "behind-the-scenes work everyone has done to bring Pasty Cam to us over the years! Thank you!

great view of things. ;O)

I do not think it is open to the public, I could be wrong though...

My wife and I spent a weekend there years ago and it was just wonderful. Loved it so much. I'd have to check their website, but I do believe it is open to tours certain days of the week.

My profile picture is a panorama of the lighthouse I
took in July of 2013.

It's a privately owned bed and breakfast but the day
I was there no one was home. Open tours are limited
to specific times.

Sweet Dreams compliments of the Sand Hill Bed & Breakfast.

Omgosh! That is just so beautiful. Thank you for
that view! I've always wanted to go and spend a
night or two there, but have never gotten around to
it because we always stay with my mom and I just
don't see her often enough to leave her when I'm
visiting. Some day!!!
