Yesterday here in the Keweenaw, we had some heavy winds blowing all day, sounding like a winter storm with it whistling around the windows and roaring loudly. Making noise was the least of what those winds did though, as you can see in today's photos taken out at Big Traverse. They experienced what is commonly called an ice shove, where the winds push ice onto the shoreline, piling it up high and damaging buildings in the process.

The first four photos were snapped by Dennis Provost of his cousin's camp out there. You can see how high that ice has been pushed and shoved, since it's almost reaching the eaves of the camp roof. Dennis said that they had a few damaged windows in this camp at the point he was out there. Hopefully the ice has stopped moving, although I can still hear the wind roaring outside my window as I type this late at night.

The last two photos come to us from Jason Bessner, who also stopped to take a photo of the same camp, but from the opposite side, so you can see all the ice piled right up to the windows in the front. What an awful mess.
Jason's last photo is down the road a bit, of a different camp, where the ice pushed up so far and hard that it collapsed the front of the sauna building on the right and even tore up the roof. I can't imagine being there and watching this happening, while not being able to do anything at all to stop it.

Winter just keeps coming at us here UP North this year, with one thing after another. It certainly is a winter the Keweenaw won't soon forget. Two more days and it's May…. maybe we'll see spring then. A girl can dream, right?

Wow, just Wow!

That is amazing. I wonder if that is technically
classified as flood damage. If so, it might require
a special comprehensive rider on the insurance
policy.

Oh my! These photos are absolutely amazing!

I echo what Janie said!!

Ack! I hope this is not happening in between Eagle Harbor
and Copper Harbor!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 - 08:19 pm:

Oh, what a shame ~ sure feel bad for all the damage
to the camps. After a long hard Winter they'll have
a lot of work to do when the ice melts.

Yes, Mary, you can dream ~ and may those dreams come
true!

I've not seen that before and find it an impressive show of force by Mother Nature. I'm sure the property owners aren't impressed in the least though.

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 - 08:44 pm:

Wow, that is incredible...sending prayers! Stay safe up there.

After just experiencing the ice shoves in Menominee
I certainly feel sorry for all folks on that
shoreline. Best to all who have cabins and homes
there. Nature can be brutal at times.

Good pictures. As amazing as they are, the Saginaw Bay (on Lake Huron) had very similar ice shoves here in mid-Michigan for a number of lake front homes a couple of years ago.

Wow...that will wake you up in the morning. Too bad it can't be bagged and sold in stores.
