Danielle Adams was waiting patiently for the arrival of these two Coast Guard cutters and the first freighters of the season to arrive in Marquette, this past week. That's the Katmai Bay and the Morro Bay, tied up there at the dock in Mattson Park. Danielle filled me in with a little info about their arrival in the harbor:

The Morro Bay had suffered some damage from breaking ice a few weeks earlier and after being fixed was returned to service earlier last week. They left Duluth and headed to Marquette. The Katmai Bay lead the way, breaking a path through the ice for the Kaye E. Barker and the Mesabi Miner. Once here in Marquette, both cutters went to work breaking ice around the dock so the boats could get in. Both the Barker and the Mesabi were the first of the season in Marquette and once finished up there, they left with the Katmai in the lead, heading toward Whitefish Bay. I was talking to two of the guys on the Katmai and they said the trip in wasn't bad, pretty easy actually, compared to what it has been out on Lake Superior itself.
Sure hope the ice on the Big Lake starts breaking up and melting soon, so the freighters can make their way to and from the ports without having to follow the Coast Guard cutters everywhere they go.

Coupla nice looking boats ~ thanks, Danielle.
Anyone know where Morro Bay got its name? One of our favorite places to visit/stay while living in California was Morro Bay. Beautiful little seaside resort.

Was 'watching' the freighters waiting in line for
their escort across Lake Superior. Also saw where
the Roger Blough had ice damage. All too common
this year!

Love the U.S. Coast Guard. My favorite branch of the service.
