Here in the Keweenaw, the first total Lunar Eclipse of 2014 and the Blood Moon, were photographed by a number of photographers and we have two of them sharing their photos here with us today.

The first three photos were snapped by Bob Gilreath, who sacrificed extra sleeping hours to capture this phenomenon for all of us that were sound asleep and unaware it was even happening in the skies above.
His first shot shows us the Blood Moon with the star Spica just to the lower right. Then his second photo widens out, so you can also see Mars in the upper right.
Bob's third picture is the moon in one of the phases during the total Lunar Eclipse. Pretty spectacular how you can still see just a shadow of the moon and then the bright strip of it shining so bright.

The second set of three photos come to us from Joe Schneller, another dedicated star gazer that stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to record this event for us.
His first shot of the three bottom ones, zooms in on the moon as the Lunar Eclipse was just beginning….still so bright, but shadowed on the left side. Then the next photo, gives a view of the shadow overtaking more of the moon as the phases advance.
In Joe's last picture, we again see the Red Moon, with Spica in the lower right, only the moon seems to be still partially hidden by the eclipse. Joe did mention that the color red of the Blood Moon in this photo was actually better with the naked eye and that he was just amazed by the whole event.

Thanks, Bob and Joe, for staying up past your bedtime, so the rest of us could enjoy the show, too.

Very cool pictures! I meant to set my alarm so I
could watch it, but forgot. So thanks for the
pictures!

One of my favorite Eclipse photos in the Guest Gallery is from Aimee Rathbun back in 2004. She managed to capture exceptional detail. Wonder if Aimee caught the show this week?

Eclipse
We were blessed with several days of clear weather over the past week, including the night of the eclipse. But all of that came to an end late yesterday afternoon, and we awoke to several inches of new snow and freezing drizzle. Sharon Smith's Copper Harbor cam says it all:

Maybe this is why I have not slept well. I should have went outside.

Nice! Wanted to watch, but clouds got in the way. :-(

Good morning. Great pictures! I was hoping someone had some pictures of the total lunar eclipse! I didn't even bother to get up because we were overcast, with snow coming down here in mid-Michigan at the time. Have a good day you all.

Thanks, Bob and Joe, for the Blood Moon shots! It was cloudy in s.w. OH, so didn't see it.
That's okay ~ I'm partial to the "Blue Moon of Kentucky".;>

Outstanding work!! Thank you.

I also want to thank the persons responsible for
taking the pictures of the eclipse. We were not
that cloudy, I just didn't have the patience to wait
it out. Checked it at 11:30 local time and it had
barely began.

Thanks again Ray

Mary, the shadow on the moon is the shadow of our Earth. We were between the sun and the moon at the time. Really nice pix. Thanks to you and the crew we get to see these pix.
