Seems like there are many of us who would consider ourselves "boat nerds" and each of us enjoys watching the freighters as they come and go on Lake Superior. If you're like me, you imagine what an amazing job it would be as a sailor aboard one of these big boats, but I'm not sure any of us think about what it is like in the frigid sub-zero temperatures, like the first two photos here today. Keith Baker works aboard the Cason J. Callaway and he snapped these photos while underway in what he describes as sea smoke and heavy frost on board the boat.

In Keith's last three photos, the Callaway is waiting above the Soo Locks, tied up on the Northwest pier. The Indiana Harbor was stuck in the "Rock Cut" and the Callaway was waiting to get clearance to proceed down, once the Indiana was freed.

That's quite a bit of ice in the locks area. Makes me wonder if the shipping season will end earlier than the planned date of January 15, 2014 or make it to that mid-January deadline after all.

All of us here at Pasty Central, wish all of you a very Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone! Wishing you a Safe, Healthy, Prosperous and Happy New Year! It looks like this will be a "real" winter for Michigan, both UP and LP for the first time in a long time. Stay warm!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 - 05:46 pm:

Just a little late getting started because of a WHOLE LOT of work being done behind the scenes. We are expanding this page to add a Facebook path, for Cammies who may be registered in both places.

Happy New Year, Marianne and Charlie ~ and all later posters!
Charlie, you certainly deserve a vacation this year!;-)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 - 06:44 pm:

Happy New Year everybody!

Really cold here, as I hear it is there too.

Charlie, happy to see you were able to get things
going for the New Year. Thanks!!

Hi. I don't understand what is going on. My original post (the first one that I could actually post today, but not the first one) was posted on the What's Up page, yet now it is magically moved to the regular page? Gremlins in the system, I guess? Happy New Year everyone.

By Pat & Glenda (Gormfrog) on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 - 07:25 pm:

HAPPY NEW YEAR
2014 already?
Gosh, life is like taking a bath. The longer you stay in the more wrinkled you get. That's OK, hope this new year is a good one!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 - 07:28 pm:

We are trying to make changes in the format, for the time being, posting only on the main Cam Notes page

Sometimes it doesn't take much to confuse us Charlie
:-)

Great photos! Happy New Year!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 - 08:53 pm:

Oh WOW! Great pictures!

When we were coming home yesterday, we were crossing
the bridge between Superior & Duluth. There was a
freighter in the harbor with an ice breaker in front
of it. It was so much fun to watch it breaking the
ice so the freighter could get through. I love
those ships! Thanks for sharing!

I was just on the "What's UP" page. Very cool. But
you can't comment!

Amazing photos. There is something fascinating about life on "the boats".

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 - 09:07 pm:

My husband and I saw a freighter locking through at the Soo on our
way back to Toronto on Monday, December 30th. It was the Edwin
Gott.

Hooray for Charlie and Mary for all of the work they do to keep this
site going!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 - 09:10 pm:

Great photos, Keith, thanks for taking us along for the ride!
When we lived in Charlevoix I always enjoyed watching the USCG "Sundew" breaking up the ice on Round Lake.
