With a heavy heart, I'm posting here today about someone many of you will recognize if you are a regular viewer and am asking that you hold him up in prayer. EddyFitz (Ed Chaput) is gravely ill and has been admitted to hospice after a staph infection has invaded his entire body. His son Leon said, "We are now under last Rites here, as we await his departure to the Great Big Ship in the sky!"

If you aren't familiar with EddyFitz, he grew up in Hubbell and has been an avid follower of the Pasty Cam, sharing stories of his days sailing on the Great Lakes. The photo here below was taken in 1958, of Ed aboard the
Edmund Fitzgerald. Our prayers are with Ed and his family...

EddyFitz

EddyFitz and his family have been in my prayers for the past week.
A good man who has fought the good fight with a family that has
been standing by his side through the fight.

Over the years, as something of a boat nerd, or at least where the
Edmund Fitzgerald is concerned, I have been in touch with Ed
Chaput. He was kind enough to communicate with my special
education class a few years ago when we were doing a project about
the Great Lakes and freighters. The kids in my class were thrilled. It
made them feel special in a good way, and I thank him for that.

Bless you, Eddy Fitz!

I am so sorry to hear about Eddy! His recollections of his shipping days were so interesting to hear about! I enjoyed him sharing those memories! May God be with him and his families!

Oh my, what very sad news! I've enjoyed his many writings of his experiences when he was sailing. I also always enjoyed his posts on the original Boatnerd site, dating back to the time when I first became a 'boatnerd'. May God comfort and bless his family during this extremely sad time. Lord bless you, EddyFitz!!

Mary, so sorry for the double posting ~ my computer seemed to have frozen up the first time I clicked 'post message'.

My thoughts and prayers are with Eddy and his family.

This is such a hard time to lose a friend or family member. A very long time friend of mine's wife passed away very suddenly on Wednesday night this week. My heart goes out to him and their family, too.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, December 7, 2014 - 06:08 pm:

Wow! I just spoke with Ed not that long ago about UP history and there was no mention of him being sick. Sorry to hear that he's gravely ill. Nat and I send our prayers.....

LET'S ALL PRAY FOR Ed

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, December 7, 2014 - 10:31 pm:

Surrounding Eddy and his family with prayers that this isn't his time to go Home quite yet. But if it is, maybe he be guided gently into our Lord's presence and be truly Home for Christmas.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Sunday, December 7, 2014 - 10:38 pm:

I was just informed by EddyFitz's son, Leon, that Ed passed away today. May he RIP...
From his son's email:
He lost his fight with a terrible staph infection that is still unknown how it was incurred, yet took down this strong man in a weeks time. To all of you, the EddyFitz has left the port and is headed for bigger and better things I'm sure.

Prayers for strength for his family...

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, December 7, 2014 - 10:52 pm:

Amen, Mary, amen.

By Leon Chaput (Mrleonx) on Monday, December 8, 2014 - 01:38 am:

I am saddened to tell you all that Ed has passed on today. It is true the EddyFitz has set sail for the last time. I am Leon Chaput, the proud Son of Ed. I can say that all of the stories that you have read from him are true, as I have heard them all hundreds of times by the Old Man of the Sea! There is nothing in this world that meant as much to Ed as the Edmund Fitzgerald. I'm Glad that he has been able to share his experiences here with you all.
I'd like to thank all of you here for your thoughts and prayers while he has been sick this week. They have meant so much to us, his family during this hard time. Please know that you folks have kept him busy these last years! He is constantly forwarding either pics, or stories from this site including your posts, and also his Boatnerd site friends.
Again, it has been an Honor to grow up as his son for these 55 yrs, and his legacy is told In all of your own voices with the stories you each have to share about him!
Thanks again for Sharing and enjoying Him with us!
Look for me to post more to this site, and also keep you informed as we may plan an event that could include an informal ceremony at the Fitzgerald Anchor setting in Belle Isle.
Leon Chaput

My condolences Leon, to you and your family. Your father has been a welcomed voice who's input was always respected.
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your father and for carrying on the Chaput legacy.
