A little over 4 years ago our family here in Eagle River was adopted by a loveable Newfee-Black Lab mix we named "Shadow" (the third in a series of Copper Country Humane Society Alumni). You may have seen him on these pages, exploring the Keweenaw with us in every season - walking the colorful dunes in the Fall, helping us scoop the drifts in Winter, enjoying new blossoming life in Spring, and playing with the grandkids during their U.P. Summer visits. Just last month Shadow appeared in a shot like the final one above, entitled We'll All Miss You.

We're missing him already.

He peacefully left us on Thursday after a very rapid decline over the previous week. He had minor surgery early last year, with the prognosis that cancer could return, so his departure didn't come as a complete surprise. It just came too soon.

I'll especially miss our morning walks and regular routine during the day. Shadow was like a trainer, reminding us often to get up and get moving. The memory of his enthusiasm and zest for life will warm our hearts for a long time.

It has been our mission to bring "A Glimpse of Life from the U.P." for over 15 years. The people, the places, the history often quietly include four-legged friends, sometimes hardly even noticed. We appreciate each one, and thank the folks at the Copper Country Humane Society for all they do.

So sorry to hear. It's hard to lose a good friend. May you find peace in your memories.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 09:17 am:

Oh, Charlie, so sorry to hear Shadow has left you.
His time was so short but he sure loved his family,
and we know you loved him. A very special critter.

God bless your family

By Phil Kuusisto (Pkuusisto) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 09:18 am:

So sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose our furry friends but know you will meet again at the Rainbow Bridge.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 09:21 am:

Oh my, Charlie, what a sad time for you and Edie, and all those who loved Shadow! My heart goes out to you. May God bless and comfort you.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 09:29 am:

Charlie & Edie my heart breaks for you as I know all too well how you are feeling! The past 8 months we have had to put our younger Scottie and our daughter's Appaloosa mare to rest. May the many happy memories live on in your hearts!

By Waveaction (Lakelover) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 09:32 am:

Shadow will now be happy and healthy forever. My deepest sympathies on the loss of your best friend and faithful companion.

Rest in peace, Shadow.

By DEAN SCHWARTZ SR. (Lulu) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 09:46 am:

Remember Shadow will be waiting for you at the
bridge.

By Stewart Keskitalo (Skeskitalo) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 10:03 am:

To Charlie and Edie: Aren't dogs like Shadow just the love of your life? They do make every day special as do Scotties! Another poem that is appropriate is "footprints in the sand" a modern version of the 23rd psalm by a Canadian poet. Memories do last forever!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 10:15 am:

Condolences, Charlie and Edie...but when one door closes, another opens. Perhaps it's your door to another very lucky rescued animal. Hey, if I was a dog, I couldn't pick a better place to spend the rest of my life.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 10:28 am:

Charlie I'm so sad for you folks' sadness. I know how much my Smudge means to me. He's been thru a lot before we adopted each other. I rarely get ticked off at him. He's a blessing to me. I tried to help with the local cat rescue but I wanted to take them all home And my heart aches whenever I hear of any abuse. There is a special place in •••• for any one who harms children, old folks or animals. When the time comes there will be another special critter for you. Realize that the these souls are a gift from the Lord from above in a furry wrapping. Peace.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 10:32 am:

I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost your Shadow, Charlie and Edie.
Back in August, when we ran into the three of you at the Eagle River Falls, I tried to take a picture of my Granddaughter petting Shadow, but she ran off too quickly. You and Shadow look good in the photo, so I thought I'd share it here, too.

RIP, Shadow...

I am so sorry for your and Edie's loss, Charlie. My heart breaks for you. We lost our wonderful boy, Snow Bear, at age 14 in February this year. I have tears rolling down my face now for both your loss of Shadow and our loss of Snow Bear! Take care.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 10:46 am:

So sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to have pet dogs leave like that.

By dane l. christensen (Danech55) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 10:50 am:

Shocked and saddened to hear about Shadow, Charlie and Edie. He was a good dog, and the way he got his name makes me smile. You two saved him and gave him a new life. Dane and Jill.

By Jim Grill (Grillski) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 11:56 am:

So sorry to hear of your loss. There is an old saying that goes "If love could have saved him, he would have lived forever". Looking at the pictures, you can see how happy he was, and loved.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 01:08 pm:

Thanks for all of your thoughtful notes. Edie happened to notice in today's Day in History that Pinkerton's office featured pictures of dogs on the wall. Looking a little closer I see that he actually has an assistant at his feet, much like Shadow has been constantly by my desk over the past few years.

I believe God knew that man would need a 'faithful' friend ~ so He made doggies!:)

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 02:51 pm:

Charlie and Edie, so sorry to her about Shadow. He looks quite a bit like a dog I had, especially in that smiling image from spring. It's always so hard when they leave us. But what awesome memories we have to treasure!

By Just me (Jaby) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 02:52 pm:

Losing a beloved pet-leaves a hole in the heart. so
sorry . my sympathy in the loss of your pet.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 03:23 pm:

Oh Charlie and Edie--what a significant loss in your lives.
Goldwinger is right though, Shadow had one of the best places in
the world to live. Two and a half years have gone by since our dog,
Rusty, died. Not a day goes by that my husband and I don't think of
him fondly. Shirley, I think you're right. Dogs seem like God's
emissaries. R.I.P. Shadow.

By Bob S (Oldtoot) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 04:43 pm:

What a sad thing to loose a dear 4 footed friend. Lacy left us last
year, again, we knew it was coming, but it was still hard. She was a
very demanding dog, but we miss the forced walks she insisted on
and the punctual meals she demanded. Even, our Sophie still looks
around when Lacy's name is mentioned. Lacy was a rescue dog, I
am not sure if we rescued her, or our daughter with three small
children who could not cope with a demanding high need pooch.
Lacy was the second dog we lost, both were "pound puppies" as is
Sophie. God sure made something special when He created dogs.

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 04:43 pm:

Blessings to everyone....it's so hard to lose a pet.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 08:25 pm:

Charlie and Edie, I'm very sorry for your loss of Shadow! Great looking dog! I believe he's running with a smile in Heaven. May your memories bring you pleasant smiles.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Sunday, September 15, 2013 - 08:28 pm:

Awww, tears for you both, Charlie and Edie. The
worst thing about dogs and cats is their
comparatively short life span. Sounds like Shadow
made the most of his life tho'. Remember all the
good times and cherish those memories.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Monday, September 16, 2013 - 12:30 pm:

My sympathy Charlie and Edie. The unconditional love that a dog returns to us is beyond words. Shadow was a beautiful dog.
Rest in peace Shadow.

By Jose (Jtraveler) on Monday, September 16, 2013 - 04:09 pm:

Charlie, judging by the pictures, I'd say that Shadow was a very gentle spirit - very special, as well. May your memories of her help thru the times when you're missing her.

RIP, Shadow.

By Jose (Jtraveler) on Monday, September 16, 2013 - 04:15 pm:

Sorry! I should have said, "when you're missing him".

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Monday, September 16, 2013 - 04:36 pm:

I add my condolences for your loss, Charlie and Edie. It's been four years since I lost my Mouse but his spirit still remains. May Shadow's spirit continue with you!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Monday, September 16, 2013 - 09:27 pm:

Rest in peace Shadow!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, September 16, 2013 - 10:37 pm:

Oh Charlie, I feel so awful for you all. You just
lost a dog not that long ago and now to lose Shadow
seems so unfair. My heart aches for all of you as I
know how awful it is to lose one of your faithful
companions and best friends.

You have my sympathy and may Shadow RIP. Thank you
for giving him such a great life :-)

By C Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 - 12:39 pm:

I am so sorry to hear that Shadow has left you behind. At least it sounds like he didn't suffer long and now he is good as gold being Someone else's Shadow. My animals are all rescues and I think they know that they have been rescued and are eternally grateful. Heaven: where all the dogs (or cats) you have loved will be waiting at the gate.
