If you're looking for a camping adventure that would be considered roughing it, meaning no conveniences and packing everything you need in to the site, then you can take a cue from Halli Lindley and her family. They recently hiked in to the Mouth of the Montreal River, near Lac La Belle and camped there, catching fish for dinner, cooking oatmeal over a campfire, sleeping in tents on the shore of Lake Superior.

Quite an experience for both the young and the old in the group, but I'm guessing more of a shock to the kids, since they're often so used to being 'plugged in' to something for their entertainment. Kudos to families like Halli's, who get their kids outdoors like this, showing them how much fun they can have without 'things' to entertain them.

It's about a 2 mile walk into the river mouth. Once you're there and have your camp set up, you can explore the two falls in the area, do some fishing, swim in the clear waters of Lake Superior or just enjoy communing with nature, uninterrupted by the sounds of civilization. Of course you have to pack everything you'll need, in with you as you can see in the photo of Halli, packed up and ready to hike back out. Halli said her pack was much bigger on the hike in and even though she walks or runs just about every day, carrying a loaded pack like that made for some sore leg muscles by the time she got back home.

A few years ago a friend of mine had four bars on his cell phone at the mouth of the Montreal. He had no signal in Eagle Harbor.

Wow...it doesn't get much better than that.
I wanted to visit the Montreal when I hiked to Bare Bluff, but left it for another adventure. Don't know if I could make now, unless I'm choppered in :-(

Beautiful smallies indeed. We caught a couple nice pike and some brookies while in the Keweenaw, or I should say I caught fish; Dr. Nat was very good at feeding fish.....

What a welcome back to the tropics yesterday. We stepped out of the truck for fuel and about melted in the heat/humidity north of Houston. They are saying it will only be 96 today....... woohoo, break out the long-sleeves!!

I so LOVED the photos today. It is wonderful to see kids outside, enjoying nature -instead of thumbing their smartphones. Awesome!

Very nice trip. I'm glad I get to see the Montreal again, if only in pictures.

My wife's idea of "roughing it" was when I would only let her take ONE suitcase up to the hotel room. God bless her.

Great pictures, Halli! We took the Keweenaw Adventure hike to Montreal Falls when we were there two weeks ago. Great hike! Charlie was sure an excellent guide, too! Boy, do I miss it UP there.

Where were the smallmouth bass caught - in the Lake or one of the holes in the river? First I've heard of smallmouths being caught there.

Does anyone know who owns that beautiful house at
the former Smith's Fisheries? Right where you park
for the hike to Montreal Falls.

D.A., I agree with your wife's idea of 'roughing it'!;>

Hallis pictures made the pasty cam! I didn't make that trip cause I had to work but was happy to hear they had fun. We caught some smallmouth there a few years ago, it was at the mouth then. I think thats where they were this time too.
