Joe Kirkish was acting as our "roving reporter" recently, when he attended the St. Vinnie's Fashion Show in Ontonagon, titled, An Afternoon in June. Joe snapped a number of photos of the event to share with us and provided the following narrative to accompany them:

"Once a year an energetic group of Ontonagon residents get together and put on a St. Vinnie's Fashion Show for a charitable cause. This is the 4th, with proceeds going to purchase Sonco Ambulance Equipment. The charge for viewing the show (with an opportunity to buy the clothing after the show concluded), was $5. The place was packed and response from the audience was enthusiastic. Outfits were actually sold immediately after the show was over, with unbelievably, reasonable prices. As an example of those prices, the young lady on crutches in the second photo, is a student at MTU; she purchased a beautiful summer dress for $1.50.

The motif this year was for some reason China, with decorations, chopsticks and fortune cookies on the tables.
All you can eat pies, with coffee was served as part of your admission and they were some of the best homemade pies you'll ever taste.

In the third photo, models waited nervously for the show to start.
The first model (fourth photo) is dressed for boat wear, ready for an excursion on Lake Superior.
There was only one fellow who volunteered for the show - seen here in the fifth photo, sporting a casual outfit for dating. In the same photo, on the right, is the MC of the event, radio celeb over at WMPL, Jan Tucker.
The sixth photo is the youngest model, who was in a rush to get out of the limelight as soon as possible.

The show concluded with a surprise - a woman disguised as a Chinese cook, complete with cleaver and one of the frog legs still attached to frog she was getting ready to cook."
By the smiles you can see in all the photos, it looks like both the attendees and the models had a good time at the event. What a fun way to raise money for a worthy cause.

The Chinese motif was used this year to honor Mr. Lee who started a chopstick factory in White Pine.

What a great cause..... and much better press for
Ontonagon than Ann Pollard. Shows most people are
good and care about their neighbors.

So who is/was Ann Pollard?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, June 9, 2013 - 11:07 am:

Hi Kay;

Here's a short snippet about Pollard's recent
activities:

An Ontonagon woman charged with embezzlement from
Copper Country Mental Health was sentenced in
Ontonagon circuit court. Ann Pollard was charged
with attempted embezzling from CCMH over the
course of her employment from 2007 through 2011.
Over $96,000 was embezzled from CCMH, most of
which was taken from the people who use the
services of the agency. Pollard-Parker pled no
contest in April.
