A couple of years ago we featured a Shoebox Memory about the famous libel suit brought by Theodore Roosevelt in 1913 against Ishpeming editor George Newett (see Defending His Reputation and May 26 Day in History). Here are a couple of photos that have since surfaced. The first is a portrait of the judge who presided in the case, Hon. Richard C. Flannigan. Justice Flannigan, born in Ontonagon of Irish immigrant parents, was the first true Yooper to serve as a Circuit Judge. He had a distinguished career, culminating in his appointment to the Michigan Supreme Court (see: Richard Flannigan's portrait)

The second photo is a rare sighting of Theodore Roosevelt with his nephew (right) who would himself become President one day: Franklin D. Roosevelt. At first it appeared that FDR had accompanied TR in his Marquette escapade, but a little more research revealed the shot was captured during another libel trial in Syracuse, NY, a couple of years later.

A pair of identical twin brothers/attorneys have written an excellent article about the trial, which started in Marquette on this day exactly one hundred years ago, with jury selection. One footnote: the trial, which lasted several days, was interrupted by "Decoration Day", the forerunner of Memorial Day. I have read that Teddy was often called Teedy Roosevelt. And then there was FDR who his Fala made Scottish Terrier royalty.

The Roosevelts were terrier people. Fala, FDR's Scottish Terrier of course is well known. While Teddy was in the White House he had a Bull Terrier who gained a fair amount of notoriety when he showed American hospitality by biting the French Ambassador.
